Job Description


Summary: The Learning Programs Interpreter is responsible for, under direct supervision, delivering dynamic and effective interpretive educational programs via formal and informal guest interactions, virtual platforms, social media, community events, and additional programing. They will create a powerful, emotional connection for guests through scripted and theatrical presentations, narration, and interpretation; engage with guests throughout the Center delivering public programs, tours, educational programs, and activities; interpret at exhibit areas; and offer continuous operational support. Job requires working a flexible schedule including weekends, evenings, and holidays. Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with an emphasis in formal or informal education, curriculum development, marine science, or other relevant disciplines; or equivalent work experience. Essential Duties:

  • Delivers a variety of scheduled programs and activities emphasizing conservation, empathy, and diversity. Programs and activities may include family programs, community and educational events, narrating animal feeds and training sessions, leading group tours, pop-up programs, structured learning engagement, and daily guest interpretive opportunities throughout the Center for guests of all ages.

  • Provides exceptional customer service when interacting with visitors and answering general inquiries.

  • Assists with daily operations, including opening and closing, answering emails, group check-in and orientation, and customer service.

  • Facilitates activities and logistics for special learning programs such as nocturnes, day and evening programs, virtual learning programs, outreach, and additional evening and weekend programming.

  • Gathers necessary learning tools, props, documents, and presentation slides for program setup and execution.

  • Engages students and adults of various ages and learning levels, answers questions, as well as assesses and adjusts during a learning session based on developmental and learning needs of the specific audience to optimize the learning experience.

  • Assists the Learning Engagement Manager with the conceptualization, development, supervision, and implementation of a broad spectrum of on-site and off-site learning programs for organized groups, families, and schools.

  • Stays updated on changes in exhibits and programs and informed on current events at the Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) and Seward community.

  • Fosters good relations with visitors, volunteers, community leaders, contractors, and fellow staff members by promoting positive attitudes, good will, cooperation, and providing high standards of service.

  • Complies with all Alaska SeaLife Center policies, procedures, and programs.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver programs in a fun, scientifically accurate, and engaging manner.
  • Experience in performing arts, such as narrating, hosting, moderating, or similar is preferred.
  • Knowledgeable of video recording and editing, proficiency in Adobe Premiere Pro, Canva, Google Workspace, Microsoft programs, and basic tech knowledge a plus.
  • Able to speak and write clearly and concisely in fluent English. Ability to speak or write another language, include ASL, a plus.
  • Must be available to work weekends, nights, and holidays.
Physical Requirements:
  • Requires extended periods of time on the exhibit floor, which may require remaining in a stationary position during that time while using repetitive motions of the wrists, hands, or fingers.
  • Requires ongoing interactions with people. More than 50% of the typical workday is spent communicating with visitors in a busy environment.
  • Requires flexibility and availability in schedule, as required to work weekends, evenings, and holidays.
