The Center for Consciousness Studies (CCS) at the University of Arizona has received multiyear funding to develop a just-approved new undergraduate minor program in Consciousness Studies in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS). This funding provides the salary for a new part time temporary position as a combination of Adjunct Teacher in SBS, and Research Associate in CCS.
The University of Arizona has been recognized for our innovative work-life programs. For more information about working at the University of Arizona and relocations services, please .
Duties & Responsibilities
The teaching duties involve primarily a comprehensive review introductory course in Consciousness Studies, suitably as one of the core courses that all students in the undergrad minor must attend. The course content should cover the half dozen major scientific theories of consciousness, as well as topics involved in related areas, such as standard brain imaging techniques, spiritually based theories of consciousness and theories related to such practices and therapies as Mindfulness, meditation and achieving higher levels of consciousness. We are seeking a recent PhD with extensive experience mentoring and teaching enthusiastic students, who also has direct experience relevant to organizing and teaching a broad undergraduate introduction to Consciousness Studies. [We will work with the selected candidate to make sure that the course meets University of Arizona requirements. The target course is SBS310C, which meets twice a week in the fall term, a double session on Wednesdays, and a discussion section on Fridays: it is expected that the course will be online via Zoom.]
The service and research duties involve assisting the CCS director of education studies and SBS in further developing programs in Consciousness Studies, designed to continue making CCS and the college an increasing focus of education in all facets related to the study of Consciousness. This potentially includes developing collaborations with other institution in special courses or programs, development of new teaching materials of use to courses at the UofA and other institutions, in more traditional fields that would benefit from modules in courses related to Consciousness (E.g., Psychology, Neuroscience, Computer Science, Anthropology, Religion, Health, etc.), preparation of new funding proposals as needed for future developments.
