Duties
  • Operates such tools as air hammers, drills, and electric saws for cutting tile, brick, and blocks.
  • Must have a working knowledge of the tools, equipment operations, basic trade practices, and be familiar with the names and uses of various masonry and plaster materials.
  • Knowledge and skill to frame(layout)walls, rough openings for doors and windows, install block and brick, patch and paint.
  • Plan work and determine methods and techniques to be used.
  • Knowledge in determining the proper grade, size, and type of lumber or wood substitute material required for the job.
  • Ability to interpret blueprints, sketches, manufacturers\' specifications and technical manuals and be knowledgeable in shop math, standard formulas and standard shop practices.
  • Knowledge of architectural drawings and blueprints. Ability to interpret specifications, footnotes, and dimensions on drawings.
  • Knowledge of the safe use of both hand and power tools within the carpentry, mason and painting career fields.
  • Repairs roofs, locate leaks, and removes existing roof materials while being sensitive to historic fabric.
This position is covered by AFGE bargaining unit. Per the Master Agreement, the Area of Consideration will be: 1st Area of Consideration - Current Facility and CBOC employees; 2nd Area of Consideration - VA Nationwide applicants; 3rd Area of Consideration - Other Status candidates

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 2:00pm-10:30pm, subject to change based on the needs of the facility.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Moderate lifting (45lbs+), moderate carrying (15-44lbs), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required, climbing (use of legs and arms), both legs required, both eyes required, ability to distinguish basic colors, and hearing (aid may be permitted).Work is inside and outside in hot, humid or cold environments. It is usually dusty, dirty and greasy. Must be able to work at heights as job dictates or work under buildings in close quarters to accomplish goals of the Building Structures Unit (BSU). Incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of sometimes severe strains, cuts, burns, noise, eye damage, bruises and infection and is, therefore, required to use appropriate procedures and personal protective equipment. Also exposed to other hazards such as eye injuries while chipping plaster and concrete and frequently exposed to dust and dirt while mixing concrete. There is continuous exposure to paint splatter and inhalation of fumes from chemicals in paint. Duties are performed as assigned to both divisions of the medical center.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Participation in the seasonal influenza program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). It is a requirement that all HCP to receive annual seasonal influenza vaccination or obtain an exemption for medical or religious reasons. Wearing a face mask is required when an exemption to the influenza vaccination has been granted. HCP in violation of this directive may face disciplinary action up to and including removal from federal service. HCP are individuals who, during the influenza season, work in VHA locations or who come into contact with VA patients or other HCP as part of their duties. VHA locations include, but are not limited to, VA hospitals and associated clinics, community living centers (CLCs), community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), domiciliary units, Vet centers and VA-leased medical facilities.
