Maintenance Transportation Supervisor--Sign Shop
The City of Roanoke is seeking a Maintenance Supervisor to supervise and lead the sign shop staff that is responsible for the technical work in the installation, repair and maintenance of signs and pavement markings and other traffic control devices. The successful candidate will supervise and train the sign shop personnel on the route maintenance work and equipment to ensure a safe working environment and to provide a clear marked and signed public right-of-way for all road users; conduct staff job performance reviews and assist the City Traffic Engineer with budget preparation and tracking; coordinate planning schedules and materials estimates with the sign shop crew leader; maintain accurate records, work schedules and database for daily work activity; maintain and inspect the installation procedures of sign and pavement markings in accordance with the Manual on Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and other traffic control standards. Performs staff job performance evaluations and schedules staff for special events during and after regular working hours; and provide high quality customer service to both internal and external customers and respond to their requests. They will also perform related duties, as assigned. High school diploma or general education degree (GED) supplemented by three to five years related experience and/or training in the construction and maintenance of municipal traffic sign and marking operations; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Examples of Duties
SUMMARY
Supervises and performs skilled and technical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signals, signs and other control devices.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Delegates tasks, supervises assigned personnel and participates in the installation, repair and maintenance of traffic signals, fire alarm systems, emergency lights and other electrical and electronic equipment
Inspects work in progress and upon completion, verifies proper observance of safety precautions
Operates and supervises the operation of heavy construction equipment in the installment of traffic signs.
Trains and instructs assigned personnel in approved work methods
Recommends, designs, schedules and supervises modification of traffic signal controller, relays, fire alarm systems and other apparatus
Supervises the operation of computerized sign making equipment
Procures routine materials and maintains inventories
Inspects work by contractors which relates to or affects the systems maintained
Makes or supervises emergency repairs to equipment and systems outside normal working hours
Keeps records of work and makes reports
Assists in preparation of sketches, plans and specifications for new construction, installation and major repairs to existing systems and equipment
In absence of superintendent, directs activities of the division when authorized
Retimes traffic signals based on traffic flow changes
Assists contractors and utility companies during new construction
Assists with implementing and developing computerized timing and phase sequence for traffic signals and systems
Assists with signal and sign installations meeting Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and Standard Highway Signs (SHS) standards
Knowledge of pertinent rules and regulations, guidelines, safety orders, departmental operating procedures and safety regulations sufficient to insure that work is performed in compliance with applicable law.
Develops and maintains a preventive maintenance schedule program for equipment and machinery.
Ensures required OSHA and other mandated training and certifications are completed by assigned staff.
Enforces sound safety and housekeeping practices.
Ability to establish a culture of safety for employees and ensure that work processes are free from safety and health hazards, employees are properly trained and programs are in place to ensure safety.
May be required to wear some type of respiratory protection in the performance of their duties
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises an assigned staff of employees in the area of traffic signals or signs & markings. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization\'s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) supplemented by technical training in electrical and electronic engineering; three to five years related experience and/or training in the construction and maintenance of municipal traffic signs, signals and alarm systems; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
