Description

Under direct supervision, performs a variety of standard building and facility maintenance, and minor repair duties in buildings, facilities, and adjacent grounds; interacts with and provides standard information to the public. Some duties require the employee to drive a truck or other vehicle to transport personnel and/or equipment. Work assignments will vary depending upon season and projects to which assigned. May work on call when scheduled to perform job duties as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

This is the entry or trainee level class in the Maintenance Worker series. Employees in this classification often work as part of a crew and under immediate or relatively close supervision. This position is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker II classification by the lack of assignments involving semi-skilled maintenance tasks, the lack of greater work responsibility on projects, and the need for closer supervision and more detailed direction.

Supervision Exercised and Received:

Under Immediate Supervision - Incumbents at this level are closely supervised in essentially all aspects of their assigned work except for routine and basic tasks. Work methods are generally prescribed in specific terms. They usually follow an established routine with general assignments, and their work is subject to frequent reviews. A position may involve repetition of a limited number of tasks that after initial training and review warrant only occasional supervisory re-review. This type of direction is normally reserved for entry and trainee level positions.

Examples of Duties

(Performance of these functions is the reason the job exists. Assigned job tasks/duties are not limited to the essential functions). * Performs general repairs that do not require a specialized technician. Examples may include repairing drywall, painting, and repairing doors and other building fixtures.

  • Assists in the repair, maintenance and remodeling of plumbing and pipefitting systems, equipment, and facilities.
  • Assists in the inspection and identification of equipment or machines in need of repair.
  • Assists in troubleshoots issues to determine necessary repairs performs routine maintenance on building systems.
  • Assists in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems, such as, motors, generators, transformers, conduit, and interior wiring components, etc.
  • Performs or assists in rough and finish carpentry, including cabinetry, shelves, dividers, paneling, and partitions; assists in installing ceiling and flooring materials; installs locks, closing devices and other door and window hardware; prepares forms for concrete laying and assists in the finishing of concrete projects.
  • Performs or assists in painting of interior and exterior building surfaces; prepares surfaces for painting, protects surrounding surfaces, and uses a variety of methods to apply paint or other covering materials such as brushes, rollers, and spray equipment.
  • Assists in reading and interpreting standard plans, specifications, blueprints, and schematics; Assists in preparing as-built sketches.
  • Inspects assigned areas; corrects or reports safety hazards; maintains facilities for public use.
  • Performs snow removal and salting of facilities and access ways.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of hand and power tools and equipment related to activities.
  • Observes safe work methods and uses safety equipment; secures worksites from safety hazards as necessary; attends safety meetings.
  • When scheduled and on short notice, returns to work to performs job duties.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
Typical Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: (KSAs are the attributes required to perform a job; generally demonstrated through qualifying experience, education, or training.)

Knowledge of:
  • Appropriate use and maintenance of hand and power tools, and other equipment common to basic maintenance tasks.
  • Basic maintenance tasks such as use of hand tools, power tools, or construction materials.
  • Basic cleaning and refuse removal procedures; and
  • Standard carpentry, grounds, and facilities maintenance and repair procedures.
Skill to:
  • Use maintenance tools, equipment, and supplies in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Use hand and basic power tools.
  • Measure and calculating angles, lengths, and volumes.
  • Safely use and maintain hand and power tools related to the work.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed.
  • Contribute effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives, and activities.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work
Ability to:
  • Install fixtures, decorations, etc.
  • Effectively organize and manage time.
  • Recognize the need to repair or refurbish fixtures and equipment.
  • Follow instructions from supervisors or senior maintenance workers.
Required Certifications and Licenses: Possession of a valid driver\'s license or alternate means of travel. Ability to pass a Sheriff\'s Office grade background check. OSHA 10-Hour Construction Training certification within 15 days of date of employment in accordance with NRS 618.983(1).

Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent and 1 year of general experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of building operating systems and facilities; or any combination of training and experience that would demonstrate the desired knowledge and abilities of the position.
