Job Description


The Utah Department of Health and Human Services is seeking a highly motivated, qualified individual to work as a Medical Assistant In the Correctional Health Services Division. If you would like an opportunity to join a team of passionate individuals who work hard in providing quality medical care, this is the job for you.Medical Assistant\'s (MA\'s) main role is to provide support and assistance to nursing and provider staff. Administrative duties may include maintaining medical records and facilitate medical appointments. Clinical duties may include, preparing treatment and patient exam rooms and recording patient medical history. Assist the Registered Nurse on duty as needed.Example of Duties

  • Assist nurses or physicians in the operation of medical equipment or provision of individual\'s care.
  • Check and record vital signs, such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse, blood sugars, weight, etc. as directed by nursing staff.
  • Perform routine laboratory tests and sample analyses.
  • Authorize drug refills and provide prescription information to pharmacies.
  • Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician or medical staff.
  • Help medical staff examine and treat patients, handing them instruments or materials or performing such tasks as giving injections, removing sutures and changing dressings on wounds.
  • Collect blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, log the specimens, and prepare them for testing or forwarding to a laboratory.
  • Ensure all related reports, labs and information is filled out and available in patients medical records.
  • Prepares treatment rooms for patient examinations; disinfects and cleans treatment rooms following patient examinations.
  • Keep medical supplies stocked, maintain instruments, prepare sterilization as required.
  • Properly dispose of contaminated supplies.
  • Maintain all logs and required checks (i.e. refrigerator temperatures, emergency medications, expired medications, oxygen, etc.)
Qualifications(includes knowledge, skills, and abilities required upon entry into position and trainable after entry into position)
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.
  • Knowledge of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities. This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures.
  • Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
  • Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
  • Knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions, and for career counseling and guidance.
  • Actively looking for ways to help people.

The things to be compared may be presented at the same time or one after the other. This ability also includes comparing a presented object with a remembered object.
Supplemental Information
  • A conditional offer of employment will be made pending a satisfactory completion of a background check.
  • Must possess, upon hire, knowledge and skills in medical assisting usually obtained through education, or a combination of education and experience, in order to perform the administrative and clinical duties of this job.
  • Requires considerable & strenuous physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, reaching, recurring lifting. Must be able to life and carry over 50 pounds.
  • Risks found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations, e.g. being subject to possible physical attack.
  • Certification as a medical assistant is preferred, but not required.
