NAGPRA AssistantDepartment: Culture and LanguageProgram: Culture and LanguageReports to: Cultural Resource SupervisorEmployment Status: Part-TimeFLSA Status: Non-ExemptSchedule: 20 Plus HoursPreference: TERO Ordinance 2017-01, P.L. 93-638Job SummaryThe Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) Assistant, under general supervision of the Cultural Resource Supervisor to support the management and documentation of NAGPRA compliance activities within the Tribe. The NAGPRA Assistant will aid in maintaining accurate records, conducting interviews with Tribal Members, and supporting inventory efforts by organizing, digitizing, and cataloging files pertaining to cultural objects and/or remains while ensuring compliance with the NAGPRA and National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA).Essential Functions

  • Identify and inventory Tribal sites/facilities where NAGPRA records are stored
  • Schedule and conduct interviews with Tribal Members
  • Assist NAGPRA Coordinator to set up NAGPRA training
  • Travel with NAGPRA Coordinator to locations where Tribal artifacts and/or remains are located to capture and record their condition
  • Consolidate and commit new records to a searchable database
  • Assist in establishing and populating a digital repository
  • Adherence to Tribal policies related to human remains, artifacts and cultural resources
  • Ensures compliance with Tribal, federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, Tribal policies and TERO ordinance
  • Flexible weekly or daily schedule to accommodate the needs of the Tribe

QualificationsEducation
  • High school diploma or GED
Experience
  • Coursework or experience working with Cultural, Archaeological, NAGPRA, or Anthropology Projects and Programs
Preferred
  • Knowledge and experience working with cultural diversities
License/Certification
  • Must have a valid Alaska State driver's license and must remain insurable under the Tribe's policy, or obtain within 90 days of hire, or, with approval of the hiring manager, sign a *Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in lieu of having a driver's license to perform the required duties of the position (If Applicable)

  • Conducts research in areas specific to cultural preservation
  • Facilitates problem solving
  • Establishes effective working relationships with a wide range of people including, but not limited to, the following: archaeological consultants, federal and state agency staffs, community officials, members of the community and the public
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Proficient with Microsoft Suite, or obtain training within 90 days of hire
  • Conducts business in a service-oriented manner that is attentive, pleasant, respectful and kind when dealing with un'ina, visitors, co-workers and others
