Job Description


Responsible for timely review of clinical laboratory, imaging and referral results with follow-up and patient notification of abnormal findings. Clear and accurate documentation of outcomes, care plans, and related communication in compliance with the Medical Standards and Guidelines (MS&Gs). Provide patient education, referrals, and healthcare navigation support. Address patient health-related needs in coordination with health center staff to ensure high-quality care and an excellent patient experience.

  • Notify patients of abnormal test results, discuss pathophysiology of condition, and plan of care. For certain specified abnormal results, inform treating clinician to directly notify and follow-up with patient.
  • Work within any established Patient Portal system to communicate results and care-plans with patients and respond to inquiries.
  • Manage the system of timely mailing of appropriate reminder letters.
  • Communicate with health center staff via EHR, telephone, and email as necessary to facilitate follow-up.
  • Consult with Medical Director and Co-Directors of Clinical Services to confirm clinical accuracy and appropriateness of care plans. Maintain ongoing communications with clinicians and other health center staff to ensure continuity of patient care.
  • Follow alternate procedures to maintain follow-up system in event of EHR downtime.
  • Participate in risk and quality management activities, including, but not limited to completing audits as required under direction of appropriate staff, recording any adverse reactions/events, incident reporting, and maintenance of abortion complication data.
  • Communicate inappropriate or overdue patient care plans to clinicians and/or Co-Directors of Clinical Services. Complete incident reports as required. Monitor and manage database of unassigned/unmatched labs to ensure appropriate follow-up.
  • Notify the Department of Health of any positive reportable STIs and maintain documentation of such in the patient record.
  • Performs medical referrals as indicated and appropriate follow-up in conjunction with rendering provider.
  • Maintains productivity expectations and compliance standards of the agency.
  • Contributes to the overall effectiveness of the agency by adhering to established agency policies and practices.
  • Maintain updated knowledge and provide accurate information to patients seeking information about family planning services, abortion services, birth control methods, and other patient care services provided by the organization.
  • Works independently to maintain up-to-date knowledge in the health care field via attending seminars and workshops and reading relevant material.
  • Triage calls from patients and staff per PPMW protocol.
  • Participate in after-hours emergency call triage nursing per PPMW protocol. Document and follow up on after-hours calls as dictated per protocol.
  • Assist teams as needed with patient care coordination including but not limited to patient education, patient follow-up, communication with referring providers, pharmacies, insurance providers, etc. Completes prior authorizations for medications and services as needed.
  • Provide rotating coverage or coverage as needed as staff registered nurse in abortion services including reviewing medical histories, providing patient education, administering/dispensing prescribed oral/vaginal/buccal/injectable medications, providing physical/emotional support during exams and procedures, performing blood draws and ultrasound as needed, providing nursing assessment prior to and during administration of minimal or moderate sedation, providing administration of IV sedation medications, monitoring patients in recovery room until discharge criteria is met, and recognizing and assisting in emergency situations. Maintain ACLS certification to work recovery room.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Medical Director and/or Co-Directors of Clinical Services.

Qualifications:

Required:
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with minimum Associate\'s Degree in Nursing, preferably Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in the District of Columbia, Maryland and/or Virginia.
  • CPR/BLS certified. ACLS certified for recovery room coverage.
  • Demonstrated strong leadership, communication, and coaching skills in professional activities.
  • Maintain professional, positive attitude with proven ability to contribute effectively to highly functioning work teams.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to interact with a diverse population.
  • Possess an understanding of PPMW\'s business and mission.
  • Ability to set and manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Must be highly organized and extremely detail-oriented.
  • Excellent computer, interpersonal, and listening skills.
  • Must be able to work independently and cooperatively with team members.
  • Commitment to the mission and goals of Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington.
Preferred:
  • Clinical experience in primary care, abortion, and/or sexual and reproductive health care.
  • Planned Parenthood experience
  • Spanish-speaking
