Position Summary





A Nurse Intern is a currently enrolled nursing student who is employed in a non-licensed capacity by an Idaho Board of Nursing-approved healthcare agency. A Nurse Intern may, under licensed registered nurse supervision, perform all functions approved by the Board for unlicensed assistive personnel. The Nurse Intern will be paired with a primary RN and assume the duties of an unlicensed assistive personnel for the paired patient assignment. With a reduced patient assignment, the Nurse Intern may perform nursing interventions alongside the primary RN when time allows.

This is a prn position, which requires a commitment of one 12-hour shift per week, with the opportunity to work up to 36 hours per week to match your preceptors schedule throughout the summer. Once we approach fall, your commitment would be to work one 8-12 hour shift a month.

Unit placement will be within one of our medical-surgical units and determined after the interview process is completed and selections have been made.

Responsibilities





Under the direct supervision of a registered nurse, the Nurse Intern provides optimal patient care through data collection and collaboration with a primary RN to further learn the nursing process and perform approved-nursing interventions for all patient populations served at Kootenai Health



Works with the patient's physical, motor/sensory adaptation, cognitive, and psychological needs specific to the population being served and meets standards of quality as measured by the unit/department age specific competency standards. When possible, the family or those significant to the family are considered as part of the care



Supports the department by answering call lights for all patients and notifies staff responsible if unable to meet patient need



Follows the delegation process when receiving requests from a team member



Reads charts, dials, equipment settings, literature, and other printed and handwritten materials



Communicates with patients, physicians, families, and co-workers in person and on telephone



Assists patients with activities of daily living



Collects non-invasive body fluid specimens and/or gathers vital signs



Aids physicians and nursing staff members with procedures



Utilizes the electronic medical record to document patient care



Performs other related duties as assigned



Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the field



Regular and predictable attendance is an essential job function



Competent to meet age specific needs of the unit assigned

Requirements and Minimum Qualifications





Must be actively enrolled and in good standing in an accredited nursing program for the duration of internship; upon graduation, may continue to work as a nurse intern for up to 3 months



Successful completion of a Nursing Fundamentals course



Entering or currently in the last year of nursing school



Proof of a Nurse Apprentice or Nurse Intern Approval Letter from the Idaho Board of Nursing



Intent to pursue Nurse Residency at Kootenai Health



Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, the computer skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, etc.



BLS required

Working Conditions





Must be able to maintain a standing and/or sitting position



Must be able to lift and move up to 35 lbs



Typical equipment used in a clinical role



Must be able to stoop, crouch or bend



Must be able to push, pull, or transport heavy equipment



Must be able to assist in patient transfer
