Job Description

This position is located in the Department of Health (DOH), HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, STD, and TB Administration (HAHSTA), Division of Sexually Transmitted Disease/Tuberculosis Control. HAHSTA's mission is to reduce HIV, STD, TB and hepatitis?related morbidity and mortality and ensure healthy outcomes for persons living with those diseases. The position serves as Nurse Practitioner at DC Health and Wellness Center (DCHWC). DCHWC is the STD & TB clinic, which operates on a low or no?fee basis and serves a diverse group of clients. DCHWC provides services aimed at prevention, treatment, and control of STDs and TB in the District of Columbia.

Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent works under the general direction of the Supervisory Medical Officer of the STD & TB Control Division. The incumbent will perform assignments in accordance with work plans and objectives provided by the Supervisory Medical Officer. The primary function of the incumbent will be to provide professional health care services, including diagnosis, screening, and treatment for health conditions, including, but not limited to: TB, STIs, HIV, PrEP and nPEP services, basic gynecological and family planning services, hepatitis C. Expansion of care services may include gender affirming care, colposcopy, high resolution anoscopy and emergency mobilization as member of DC Department of Health clinical services team. The incumbent provides mentorship to student healthcare providers.


The Division Chief may direct the incumbent on participating in operational and programmatic projects as needed to support clinical function and DC Health objectives, such as quality improvement projects, grant support, and implementation of new clinical programs. Performance is evaluated on the basis of effectiveness in managing patient care, collaboration, and participation in program enhancements with focus on equity. Work is guided by applicable policies, procedures, and guidelines of the District of Columbia and Federal government. The incumbent collaborates with nurses, medical assistants, and other clinical staff in the STD/TB Control Division to provide high quality equitable care aimed at meeting the needs of the individual and the communities we serve.

Qualifications and Education

A graduate or higher-level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.


Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.


Advanced Practice Nurse Positions: For Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) positions, applicants must possess a graduate or higher-level degree in nursing from an accredited educational program in the area of expertise or specialty indicated by the position.


Areas of specialties for positions include, but are not limited to, Acute Care, Anesthesia, Community Health, Family, Geriatric, Home Health, Midwifery, Neonatal, Oncology, Pediatric, Psychiatric, Allergy and Immunology, Women's Health, Cardiovascular, Dermatology, Occupational Health, Orthopedic, Respiratory, or other specialties identified for the position.


Individuals must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade (11) level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.


Preference for English and Spanish language fluency.

Licenses and Certifications

Applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Working Conditions / Environment

The incumbent must be able to carry out official duties in a variety of settings and conditions. Routine work will occur primarily in an office setting.
