Nature of Work

Continuous Recruitment, Statewide: This recruitment is not for a specific vacancy but to generate a pool of interested applicants. This classification has positions in every area of the state. Under general supervision at the full-performance level, these positions perform paraprofessional work for the West Virginia Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program including determining income eligibility, health screening, referrals to health and human service programs, basic nutrition education and breastfeeding education. They provide basic nutrition and breastfeeding assessment, education and counseling to groups and individuals. These positions certify participants in the WIC program and provide breastfeeding counseling to WIC participants which are governed by federal regulations and state and local policies and procedures. These positions may require travel. Perform related work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics
These positions are distinguished by the assignment of duties requiring independent judgment in application of regulations, policies and procedures and nutrition theories. These positions are responsible for the development and implementation of care plans for low-risk clients. Typically, these positions have extensive direct contact with clients and community service providers. These positions do not have supervisory or lead work responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Training: Associate degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a major in a health, nutrition, child development, or behavioral sciences field.

OR

Substitution: Successful completion of 60 semester hours from a regionally accredited college or university with at least 12 semester hours in health, nutrition, child development, or behavioral sciences field may substitute for the required training.
