Nature of Work

PMW I (hiring range $22.92 - $26.36 / hr) :

This is unskilled and semi-skilled heavy manual labor work in the maintenance of parks, recreation areas, City facilities, and rights-of-way.

An employee in this class performs routine and repetitive manual labor tasks that may involve the use of hand and power tools and the operation of light equipment. Work assignments are usually detailed and subject to supervision. At times this employee provides work guidance to part-time and seasonal personnel as assigned. Work is reviewed through observation of results achieved.

PMW II

(hiring range $25.21 - $29.00 / hr)

:

This is semi-skilled and skilled heavy manual labor work in the operation, maintenance, construction and repair of City parks, right-of-ways, recreation amenities, trails and general facilities and equipment.

An employee in this class may be responsible for organizing or performing a wide variety of manual labor and technical tasks which may, at times, be of a heavy or strenuous nature. An employee in this class normally operates a wide variety of hand and power tools and motorized equipment utilized in the maintenance of grounds and facilities. In addition, the employee may be responsible for the performance of a crew of full and part-time personnel.

PMW III

(hiring range $26.58 - $31.90 / hr)

:

This is highly skilled work in the operation, maintenance, construction and repair of City parks, rights-of-way, recreation and general facilities and equipment. An employee in this class is responsible for performing a wide variety of manual labor and technical tasks which may be repetitive in nature and will, at times, be of a heavy or strenuous nature. An employee in this class regularly operates diverse hand and power tools and motorized equipment utilized in the maintenance of grounds and facilities.

In addition, the employee may be responsible for the performance of a crew of full and part-time personnel. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Parks Supervisor. Work is reviewed through evaluation of adherence to prescribed standards and through inspection of results achieved.

Duties and Responsibilities

(Any one position may not include all the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks that may be found in positions of this class. Specific duties will be determined by work assignment, i.e., general parks maintenance, horticulture, irrigation, right-of-ways, turf maintenance.)

PMW I



Performs unskilled and semi-skilled parks maintenance work requiring use of hand tools, power tools and equipment.

Performs routine grounds cleaning and maintenance; mows grass with power, push-type or small tractor mower; cuts and hoes weeds; trims and prunes shrubbery and small trees; plants and maintains flower beds and other landscaped areas; rakes leaves; edges curbs; aerates and fertilizes turf; sprays for weeds; assists in the application of pesticides.

Loads trash and trimmings on truck and trailers; sweeps sidewalks, cleans floors, cleans park bathrooms.

Performs routine cleaning and maintenance of a variety of equipment and facilities; greases and makes minor repairs on equipment. Removes Graffiti when necessary.

Removes snow by shoveling, sanding, salting and operating snow removal equipment.

Checks park playgrounds and apparatus on a regular basis to ensure safety. Repairs playground equipment as necessary.

Prepares and maintains baseball, football, and soccer fields. Cleans debris off of tennis and basketball courts. Maintains grounds around outdoor swimming pools.

Checks irrigation systems and repairs as directed. Raises irrigation systems boxes.

Installs sod as directed.

Ability to tow a trailer or learn upon hire.

May work in roads and medians when necessary.

Completes daily vehicle check; cleans and maintains equipment as necessary and reports problems promptly.
May supervise seasonal staff.

PMW II



Performs a wide variety of grounds maintenance, construction and repair work using a variety of hand and power tools and equipment.

Assists in the training of other employees; encourages compliance with safety rules and practices; assists in the review of work of subordinate personnel. Acts as liaison between supervisor and subordinate workers and may occasionally act as crew-leader.

Participates in mowing, raking, irrigating and other turf maintenance practices; plants, transplants, sprays, irrigates, trims and assists in pruning flowers, shrubs and trees; cuts and lays sod; applies pesticides, fertilizers and other chemical substances.

Inspects, prepares and maintains outdoor recreation facilities and athletic fields; schedules routine clean-up and maintenance.

Inspects picnic, recreation and parks areas for general condition; reports to supervisor all acts of vandalism, needed repair and general condition of parks areas.

Inspects flower beds, shrub beds and trees for any visible signs of pests or disease and provides maintenance as required.

Inspects and maintains sprinkler and irrigation systems in good working order; checks for adequate coverage; checks and resets timers on system as needed; performs charge-up and winterization on a seasonal basis; responds to emergency calls to repair damaged or malfunctioning systems; analyzes need for materials and supplies to maintain and repair sprinkler system and reports same to supervisor.
Inspects greenway trails for hazards, graffiti, trash, etc.

Prepares equipment and plans for upcoming seasons.

Assists in the planning, scheduling and overseeing of work in assigned areas.

Operates and maintains electronic equipment relative to irrigation, remote controller, station master, and line locator.

Installs sod in assigned areas.

May be required to perform maintenance operations under adverse weather conditions. Assists with snow removal by salting, sanding, shoveling and/or operating snow removal equipment.

Purchases equipment and/or supplies as needed.

Works with volunteers on events throughout the year.

Assigns tasks to seasonal employees; follows up and checks on completion and quality of assigned tasks.

PMW III



Completes daily operator's checklist to ascertain that equipment is properly serviced for operation; takes necessary steps of routine nature to bring equipment up to operating standards. Determines when equipment requires additional maintenance and follows procedures to ensure that repairs are made.

Performs a variety of maintenance, construction, repair and other functions using diverse hand and power tools and motorized equipment.

Operates a variety of equipment utilized in grounds maintenance such as mowers, small tractors, automotive equipment, earth-moving equipment.

May serve as crew leader for a group of full-time or seasonal employees; schedules, dispatches, assigns, inspects and evaluates crew, equipment and work.

Advises crew members of hand tools and safety devices needed; advises crew on use of hand and power tools; takes necessary action to assure the safety of the public and crew at job sites.

Leads crew in specific maintenance, repair or construction activities; demonstrates procedures and techniques and reviews work of subordinate personnel for accuracy and completion.
Diagnoses and resolves routine maintenance problems; assists in determining personnel and equipment needs on specific operations.

Coordinates daily schedule with supervisor.

Communicates regularly with field crews and administrative offices.

Mows, rakes, and irrigates lawns; plants, transplants, sprays, irrigates, trims and assists in pruning flowers, shrubs and trees; cuts and lays sod; applies pesticides, fertilizers and other chemical substances.

Inspects, prepares and maintains outdoor recreation facilities and athletic fields; reports to supervisor all acts of vandalism, needed repair and general condition of park areas;
schedules routine clean-up and maintenance under the direction of an administrative superior.

Inspects playgrounds regularly for damaged equipment or unsafe conditions. Makes necessary repairs.

Inspects parks and greenway trails for graffiti; contacts Neighborhood Services for clean-up if necessary.

Inspects greenway trails for damaged concrete; coordinates with Engineering Department on concrete repairs. Performs trail maintenance including sweeping.

Performs maintenance operations under adverse weather conditions including extreme heat and severe cold. Directs and participates in snow removal program by scheduling staff and removing snow.

Makes plans to repair and/or upgrade parks equipment; determines supplies and tools necessary for projects and obtains same.

Plans for new flower beds and purchases plant materials needed for spring and fall planting; participates in planting flower beds.

Coordinates and works on volunteer events throughout year.

Coordinates work to be done by contractors and utility crews.

Plans for planting or re-planting of an assigned area; purchases required materials.

Performs assigned duties in accordance with departmental standards and industry standards (ANSI)

Assists in the performance review process of subordinate personnel.

May act as Parks Supervisor in his/her absence.

Education and Experience

PMW I:

High school graduate and six months experience in manual labor and/or outdoor work; preferably supplemented by one year of experience in parks maintenance or a related field; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the following knowledges, abilities and skills:

PMW II:

High school graduation or equivalent and at least two years of experience in Parks Maintenance at the City of Northglenn (or equivalent) with no less than 24 months of acceptable demonstrated skills in the operation of all equipment and performance of all functions required within the appropriate division operation supplemented by college level courses in a related field; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:

PMW III:

High school graduation plus five years of related experience, three of which shall have been as a Parks Maintenance Worker II at the City of Northglenn (or equivalent), and no less than 36 months of acceptable demonstrated skills in the operation of all equipment and performance of all functions required within the appropriate division operation supplemented by college level courses in a related field; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the following knowledges, abilities and skills:

DESCRIPTION & BENEFITS


Regular Full-Time


Employee works in a position that is classified as 40 hours per week. Eligible for full benefit package including medical, dental, life and LTD insurance; pension and general leave and optional benefits.

Regular Part-Time 30+


Employee works in a position that is classified as 30+ hours per week. City pays contribution toward employee only medical and dental insurance. Employee can pay the difference to cover spouse and/or children. Life & LTD insurance coverage is provided. Employee participates in the City's pension plan and the City contributes to the plan. Employee accrues general leave on a pro-rated basis and optional benefits.

Regular Part-Time 20+


Employee works in a position that is classified as 20+ hours per week but less than 30 hours. City pays contribution toward employee only medical insurance. Employee accrues general leave on a pro-rated basis and the City pays 3.75% toward deferred compensation and optional benefits.

Regular Part-Time


(less than 20 hours/wk)


Employee works is a position that is classified as less than 20 hours per week.

Employee accrues general leave on a pro-rated basis and the City pays 3.75% toward deferred compensation.

Part-Time (No Benefits)


Employee works in a position that is classified as a "no benefit" position (i.e., Fitness Instructor, Scorekeeper, Substitute Lifeguard). Employee is not eligible for benefits and pays 7.5% toward deferred compensation.

Seasonal/Temporary


Employee works in a position that is classified as a short-term position, is not eligible for benefits and pays 7.5% toward deferred compensation.
