As a part-time (.50 FTE) K-8 Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) you will work as part of a team that serves nearly 8,000 students at 18 campuses across Helena. This position serves a 187 day contract scheduled for 3.5 hours a day. The ideal candidate would also be open and available for an additional 3.5 hours per day (.50 FTE) K-8 Teaching assignment to make the position full-time. Entry-level starting salary range for part-time is $21,436 - $34,376 per year (full-time is $42,872.81 to $48,231.92 per year) based on education and experience in addition to a competitive pro-rated benefit plan including but not limited to sick and personal leave, retirement plan, tuition reimbursement, health benefits plan with dental and vision options, life insurance, and a section 125 plan. Learn more at:The K-8 TOSA will be responsible for developing, implementing, and assessing curriculum, instruction, and assessment programs for middle and high school students on special projects. This role focuses on enhancing educational outcomes through curriculum design, assessment strategies, and instructional practices. The TOSA will provide support and guidance to schools to continue implementation of core curricular resources and teaching practices. The TOSA will utilize continuing improvement cycles, School Leadership Teams, and the Instructional Framework to support schools. The K-8 TOSA will work with the curriculum and assessment administrators and the assistant superintendent to support work with K-8 schools on instructional systems, assessment alignment, curriculum and other special projects. The K-8 TOSA will play a crucial role in shaping the educational experiences and future success of elementary and middle school students.Some of what you will do:

  • Build collegial relationships between coaches, teachers, and principals.
  • Identify literacy needs and interdisciplinary literacy plans for monitoring and implementation district wide.
  • Guide teachers in setting goals to improve their professional practice in all areas of instruction.
  • Provide teachers with professional development and job-embedded training opportunities using the district\xe2\x80\x99s Instructional Framework and research-driven practices.
  • Reflect with teachers on lessons as they implement effective instructional practices.
  • Support buildings in identifying instructional effectiveness and student progress using tools and strategies gained through teachers\xe2\x80\x99 professional development and Instructional Framework.
  • Meet with the school administration and leadership team regularly to examine school data and assist in school-wide planning (including professional development).
  • Research professional literature and field studies to identify best instructional practices to foster high achievement in reading and literacy development.
  • Support the math TOSA in implementation of a new K-5 math curriculum.
  • Assist in implementing, evaluating, and monitoring the new state MAST assessment as it integrates into our comprehensive assessment system.
  • Work collaboratively with the 6-12 TOSA on special projects and programming.
  • Coordinate with building administrators to administer district benchmark and statewide assessments.
  • Plan, manage and work cooperatively with the Helena Public Schools Curriculum Administrator, Assessment Administrator, and building principals.
  • Assist in the development of high-quality professional development.
  • Assist in the development of EL programming and instruction for K-8 students to promote equity and inclusion.
  • Develop interdisciplinary instructional recommendations for 6-12.
Who we are looking for:
This position is a one-year TOSA position requiring the successful incumbent to work effectively with a variety of professionals in diverse settings with unique needs. Although non-supervisory, the successful incumbent may be asked to lead and direct effective professional development for teachers, focused on strategies, PDSA cycles and literacy instruction to maximize student engagement and ensure content effectiveness.The successful candidate is:
Successful experience in curriculum, preferably ELA and Literacy instruction and design/implementation, instructional strategies, assessment, data analysis and high-quality professional development. Extensive knowledge of and ability to use technology to improve instruction, conduct assessments, maintain, and manage data.
  • An experienced K-12 math educator with a Montana teaching certificate
  • Experienced in curriculum, preferably math instruction and design/implementation, instructional strategies, assessment, data analysis and high-quality professional development
  • Recognized for having extensive knowledge of and ability to use technology to improve instruction, conduct assessments, maintain, and manage data.
  • Able to apply knowledge of current research and theory in a specific field.
  • Able to establish effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community.
  • Able to speak clearly and concisely in both oral and written communication mediums.
