Position Summary

Custodian supports the College\'s primary mission by cleaning and maintaining internal and external areas of all College Facilities and other assets; Assist with cleaning and rearranging spaces as required for events and conferences; and report to the Custodial Supervisor and the Operations Manager.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule

Pay rate: $16.00 - $19.00 per hour

The successful candidate is expected to work up tp 16 hours per week. This position typically assigned as needed on a quarterly basis, with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment.

The temporary hourly employment does not exceed 1,050 hours in any 12 consecutive month period from the original date of hire. Temporary hourly employees who work more than three hundred fifty (350) hours in a twelve consecutive month period may be subject to provisions of one the collective bargaining agreements covering Classified employees at Bellevue College.

This position is expected to NOT be eligible for benefits because eligibility is limited only to employees working at least an average of 80 hours in eligible employment for more than 6 consecutive months and at least 8 hours a month.

About the Department

The Bellevue College (BC) Custodial Services Department within Campus Operations supports the College\'s primary mission by cleaning and maintaining internal and external areas of all College Facilities and other assets. The department works in compliance with local, state and federal laws and agencies by following BC\'s policies, follows and maintains safety procedures and follow-up Campus Operations program on accidents and safety prevention techniques. The department also follows APPA\'s Operational Guidelines as well as continuously improves work methods, knowledge of equipment, supplies and safety through participation in routine training sessions.

Essential Functions

Operates and Performs various housekeeping, janitorial and custodial tasks

  • Cleans and disinfects various buildings, offices, rooms, labs, common areas, institutional and non-institutional facilities;
  • Cleans, sanitizes and disinfects showers and restrooms.
  • Disinfects door handles, counters, light switches and most touched surfaces.
  • Sweeps, mops, vacuums, scrubs, waxes and polishes floors, walls and woodwork, shampoo carpets, dusts furniture and equipment; empties wastebaskets, trash, recycle and compost container.
  • Polishes furniture and metal fixtures; washes windows.
  • Keeps building entrances and walkways free of ice, snow, leaves, garbage and other debris.
  • Operates machinery necessary to perform job including upright and backpack vacuum cleaners, ride-on vacuums/extractors, blowers, scrubbers, upholstery cleaners, buffing machines, water extractors, and carpet shampooers.
Upkeeps Storage closets, equipment and supplies
  • Stacks and replenishes supplies and products in designated areas.
  • Keeps designated areas properly supplied with paper products, soap, and other items; Maintains electric powered janitorial tools.
  • Replaces furnishings, burned out light bulbs/fixtures and other miscellaneous objects. Upkeeps the custodial storage rooms, maintain inventory of supplies and products as needed and the assigned equipment.
  • Maintains assigned equipment to be clean and in a proper working order.
Facilitates work request system and support Campus Operations procedures
  • Maintains assigned area in a clean and safe condition according to BC\'s procedures; Assists in covering other runs in accordance to need.
  • Moves furniture and equipment; Set-ups and break-downs of campus functions.
  • Improves work methods, knowledge of equipment, supplies and safety through participation in training sessions with supervisors.
Other
  • Ensures compliance with local, state and federal laws and agencies by following BC\'s policies, procedures and direction directed by the Operations management or supervisor.
  • Follows and maintains health and safety procedures and follow-up Campus Operations program on accidents and safety prevention techniques.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in the custodial work.
  • Valid Washington driver license or ability to obtain one upon employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • One (1) year Custodial experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to lift, push, pull working loads of up to 50 pounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with arms overhead, kneel, bend, crawl and squat.
  • Demonstrated ability to work off a ladder (up to 8 feet).
  • Must be able to multi task and manage workload in fast paced environment.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Effective interpersonal and customer service skills.
