The mission statement of Christ Presbyterian Church is: "Worship. Walk. Serve." The position of Part-time Music Director equips the congregation of Christ Presbyterian Church to embody and live out the church's mission statement that the Lord has provided. The role revolves around areas of music and worship primarily on Sunday and service to those inside and outside the congregation.
Christ Presbyterian Church is a growing congregation in the Treasure Valley and is located at the corner of State St. and Glenwood St. in Garden City. The congregation will be moving into an expanded worship space next door to our current facility as the church has continued to grow and reach new people. It is a truly exciting time to witness and see the Lord build his church!
PURPOSE
Provide consistent musical and spiritual leadership of the Sunday morning worship service. Working together with the Pastor and the worship team, this position is responsible for the development and implementation of a vision for music ministry and disciple-making in the worship service. The primary measures of success are the engagement levels of the congregation and the ability of the Music Director to identify, equip, disciple and launch musicians and other volunteers.
PRIMARY DUTIES
Lead and accompany music and congregational singing in the Sunday worship service.
Collaborate with the worship, music, and pastoral staff members to plan the music for the Sunday worship service and other Christ Pres. services and events (Christmas Eve, Funerals, Weddings, etc.), including the selection, preparation, and leadership of music.
Create opportunities for new musicians and volunteers to be a part of the music ministry at Christ Pres. through auditions or other recruiting techniques.
Provide supervision and mentoring to the music and equipment teams.
Maintain regular contact with musicians and volunteers, advising them of pertinent information regarding services, music, rehearsals, etc.
Maintain regular contact with the Pastor and with the worship planning team to participate in vision development and implementation in line with the goals and strategies of the church.
Prepare projection slides for Sunday worship and, as required, for other Christ Pres events.
Working with the Pastor and worship planning team, identify a pool of substitute music leaders.
Other duties as requested by the Pastor, with opportunities to expand the role.
POSITION TASKS
Tasks associated with this position will be accomplished, on average, in 20 hours per week according to a weekly schedule broadly outlined as follows. This schedule is subject to change if/as the position develops.
Sunday morning worship: 5 hours
Vocal or Ensemble rehearsal: 2 hours
Instrumental rehearsal: 2 hours
Personal rehearsal: 2 hours
Prepare Sunday song sheets and projection slides: 2 hours
Music reading/reviewing: 1 hour Worship planning meeting w/the Pastor and Admin Assistant: 1 hour
Tuesday staff meeting: 1 hour
Equipment handling and maintenance: 2 hours
Administration: 2 hours
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS
Personal faith in Jesus Christ and a theology consistent with the Essentials of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church [https://epc.org/wp-content/uploads/Files/1-Who-We-Are/B-About-The-EPC/TheEssentials.pdf]* A willingness and desire to grow deeper in faith in Jesus Christ and professional development
Proficiency in piano and voice (priority given to candidates who play additional instruments such as guitar)* Ability to prepare and lead traditional and contemporary worship styles and to lead ensemble, solo, instrumental, and vocal worship in a manner that fosters the joyful worship of God by the congregation and reflects the excellence with which all other aspects of worship are conducted
Well rounded knowledge of vocal/choral music literature, contemporary worship literature*, and biblical theology to ensure the appropriateness of musical type and text to each setting for worship. Ability to write, arrange, and transpose music for various instruments as needed to support worship
Ability to lead and disciple musicians and other volunteers
Ability to work with individuals representing a wide spectrum of musical ability and/or spiritual maturity
Ability to handle multiple projects, often with tight deadlines, in an organized and timely manner
Creative problem-solving skills
Able to lift and move 30 lbs. to set up for worship services and musical performances
Proficient with computers, A/V equipment, music notation software, and basic office equipment
*Administrative tasks for the Music Director are generally associated with the fulfillment of this job description. Specific areas of administrative responsibility will be identified through discussion with the Pastor.
We define proficiency as the ability to lead congregational music from these instruments. You do not need to be a concert pianist or trained singer, but you must be comfortable enough on these instruments to lead the congregation well.
