Department: 60915 Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital - Lab: Phlebotomy ServicesStatus: Part timeBenefits Eligible: YesHours Per Week: 20Schedule Details/Additional Information:Part time outpatient phlebotomy position, 20 hours per week, start time varies depending on the needs in the department. Department is open Monday through Friday 0630 to 1800 and Saturday 0700 to 1300. Shift is 4 hours Monday through Friday and 6 hours on Saturdays, with days off as needed to equal 20 hours. This position is required to work every other Saturday. This position has direct patient care and is responsible for data entry of MD orders, performing EKG and collecting patient specimens. This position supports increasing patient volumes as well as PTO requests by other teammates (i.e holiday weeks, summer, spring break, etc.). Collaboration with inpatient phlebotomy team and cross training with inpatient is required. Ideal candidate will have experience drawing newborns, pediatric, and geriatric patients, and enjoy working in a fast paced environment.Major Responsibilities:

  • Collection of Patient specimens in accordance with accepted laboratory standards and policies and procedures in order to ensure optimal specimen integrity and accurate test results.
  • Assures proper patient identification according to policy, utilizing a minimum of two identifiers.
  • Processes incoming laboratory orders and specimens in a customer-focused cost-effective manner to ensure quality patient care results.
  • Perform and assist in noninvasive electrocardiography cardiology services
  • Timely reporting of patient results and collection logs to maintain quality patient care.
  • Actively participates in Performance Improvement and Advocate Experience activities within the department
  • Maintains a minimum level of competency on policies and procedures
  • Performs glucose time tests according to established procedures
  • Maintains work area to properly handle and dispose of biohazard material following guidelines set by OSHA, Accrediting Organization, and CAP. Perform recycling procedures per hospital guidelines.
Education/Experience Required:
  • High School diploma or equivalent
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
  • Knowledge of basic phlebotomy technique and the use of vacutainers, needles, and syringes. Basic familiarity with CRTxe2x80x99s and keyboards. Exceptional patient relation skills
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Able to access work area. Ability to work under stressful conditions and in difficult situations Ability to work Saturday morning shifts *Ability to lift/transport specimens, specimen containers, and biohazard bags weighing up to 40 pounds. May be exposed to potentially toxic and/or carcinogenic solutions and vapors. Able to work in a fast-paced environment with established time constraints. Routinely works with biohazardous specimens and infectious agents. This position can recognize needs and behaviors of the following age groups: pediatric (newborn, toddler, school age), adolescent, adult, and older adult. Evidence of this can be shown by recognizing levels of development and modifying approach and exhibiting communication skills necessary to interpret age specific responses.
  • If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
