Number: 1461The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) reports to the Director of Rehabilitation Services, and functions under the immediate supervision of the Director or Manager of Rehabilitation Services. The Physical Therapist Assistant provides physical therapy interventions to assigned patients following the plan of care established by the Physical Therapist to improve patient functional mobility and independent function. The PTA provides age and developmentally appropriate care to adult and geriatric patients.PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESExemplifies the RML REACH (Service Excellence) culture by demonstrating respect, excellence, appreciation, concern and honor in all interactions with patients, families and co-workers, and as identified in departmental and hospital wide behavioral expectations.In collaboration with the physical therapist and the patient, family and treatment team assists in providing an age appropriate program to meet each patients individual treatment goals to promote the highest level of function and independence possible.Provides physical therapy treatment to an adult and elderly population including, but not limited to:Facilitation techniques for muscle re-educationStrength exercisesEndurance trainingRange of Motion exercisesGait trainingWheelchair mobility trainingStatic and Dynamic Balance trainingUltrasoundHeat or cold applicationPulse-lavage to woundsTransfer trainingBed mobility trainingDocuments patient progress in the computerized medical record. Completes and logs patient charges. Completes discharge summaries in conjunction with the physical therapist.Participates in and prepares reports for the Medically Complex Service interdisciplinary team meetings, discharge staffings and rounds to report patients response to treatment and patient progress. Communicates to the physical therapist the patients performance and tolerance of physical therapy interventions, and makes recommendations to the physical therapist regarding modifications to the treatment plan.In collaboration with the treatment team, assists the patient in recognizing and adjusting to the limitations of the disability.Provides services in accordance with the American Physical Therapy Association Code of Ethics, the Physical Therapist Assistant Practice Act of the State of Illinois and the policies, procedures and standards of RML Specialty Hospital. Manages time, resources and supplies effectively and productively.Actively participates in staff meetings and continuing education activities. Participates on committees or task forces and attends meetings as may be assigned. Meets all annual and ongoing employee requirements (TB Testing, Annual Review, Annual Clinical Validation, and performance evaluation, etc.) by demonstrating completion prior to due date.Identifies and reports opportunities to improve work processes or patient care outcomes, related to improving patient safety. Participates in department or facility Performance Improvement initiatives as requested. Implements all applicable components of patient safety goals.Is responsible for supporting a safe work environment for self and others, by reporting unsafe conditions, and by using appropriate safe work practices such as proper body mechanics and applicable safety devices (patient lift and transfer equipment; etc.)SPECIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIREDMINIMUMPREFERREDSkills & Abilities1) The ability to communicate effectively with patients, family and team members in order to elicit their cooperation in the provision of services and meet the patients rehabilitation goals.2) Organizational skills to provide age appropriate physical therapy interventions as established by the physical therapist for a diverse patient population.3) The physical ability to transfer and position patients, move equipment as necessary, and operate all department equipment related to physical therapy interventions.Knowledge & Experience1) An Associate Degree in Physical Therapy from a college accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE.)2) Experience in an acute care or ICU environment and/or inpatient rehabilitation hospital; alternate experience of a student clinical affiliation in an acute care setting.2 years clinical experience in an acute care hospital with ICU experience.License/Certification1) Current Illinois license as a Licensed Physical Therapist Assistant.2) Current CPR certification.Certificate of Recognition of Advanced Proficiency for the Physical Therapist Assistant in Neuromuscular or Cardiopulmonary.Working ConditionsWork will be performed in a hospital patient care setting including at the patients bedside and in an organized therapy department.The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of the work being performed by people assigned to this job.
