Area of Specialization: GIS & Demographic Data

SUMMARY: Under general supervision, is responsible for map-based reporting and data analysis. On a cyclical basis, prepares federally mandated reports, such as National Transit Database inputs and Title VI compliance analyses. On a dynamic basis, produces similar outputs for city, state, regional and institutional stakeholders. Satisfies reporting requirements in an accurate, proactive manner, makes extensive use of GIS (geographic information systems) software. Maintains a working knowledge of specialized operational systems such as automatic vehicle location (AVL), automatic passenger counters (APC), and various scheduling/planning modules. Locates external data to provide essential context for internal data. Delivers outputs that are subject to extensive scrutiny by oversight agencies.

Adheres to precise timelines and standards, but also has latitude to take creative approaches to technical, multi-faceted challenges. Projects require close collaboration with other data-centric staff throughout the Department.

Area of Specialization: Ridership & Operations Data

  • Extracts data from various systems to compile performance summaries.
  • Collaborates with other groups to maximize value of technology systems.
  • Writes and updates queries to retrieve desired outputs.
  • Implements methods to increase efficiency of data compilation.
  • Maintains structured, organized files and queries for interoperability between different systems and different users.
  • Reviews inputs, outputs and new data sets for accuracy and applicability.
  • Transfers, imports and exports data/files between various platforms.
  • Compiles raw outputs into mainstream formats, such as spreadsheets and written reports.
  • Participates in City-wide efforts to enhance data accessibility.
  • Develops a working knowledge of ground-level transit operations and maintenance practices.
  • Fulfills individual requests for data, either in raw or processed form.
  • Interacts proactively with Service Development group to build effective transit services, including routes, bus stop locations and scheduled point-to-point running times.
  • Interacts with other transit workgroups to pinpoint problems and deploy solutions.
  • Archives all digital and hard-copy materials in a clear, accessible manner.
  • Advises the entire Department on matters affecting data and technology.
  • Makes occasional presentations on technology systems and reports.
  • Conducts occasional fieldwork at special events, at transit locations or on-board transit vehicles

  • Uses GIS software to develop maps for various presentation formats.
  • Queries GIS data to fulfill requests about transit characteristics.
  • Produces other geographical or tabular representations of data.
  • Extracts geographical components from various internal systems for use in a GIS environment.
  • Sources external data for use alongside internal data.
  • Maintains structured and organized files for interoperability between different users and systems.
  • Reviews inputs, outputs and new data sets for accuracy and applicability.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor\'s Degree in Geography/Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Planning, Statistics, Mathematics, Programming or Information Management

Four (4) years of experience using geographical data in a commercial environment, such as sales planning, business reporting or market research, preferably including two (2) years of experience in a municipal or public-sector function such as zoning, planning, compliance or transit management. A demonstrated ability to learn and apply new skills may substitute for direct professional experience.
