Position Focus:
The Early Onset Cancer Program is a newly developing program at Yale Cancer Center and Smilow Cancer Hospital focusing on a series of broad goals related to younger patients\' (ages 18-49) diagnosed with cancer: addressing psychosocial needs, developing novel clinical care models, enhancing clinical trials, expanding research, and raising community awareness about early onset cancers. Initially the program will focus on patients with early onset breast and gastrointestinal cancers, the two most common among this age group, and will move quickly to include the entire spectrum of early onset cancers. A central role in this program is a navigator/coordinator who will help guide patients through the oncology care system and address barriers, make referrals, and ensure patients and their families are getting what they need in their journey.
Given the transdisciplinary and integrated nature of this program of care and research, the program manager will focus attention on supporting the vision of Drs. Giri and Borstelmann, ensuring projects move forward as planned, addressing issues and problem-solving as we implement across departments, disciplines (e.g., physicians, nurses, researchers, social workers, navigator, community health workers, genetic counselors, etc.) and a broad range of additional stakeholders, including patients and their families. We are developing foundational components of the program including several workgroups, a steering committee, and an advisory group- the position of program manager will focus on timely coordination and communication with these entities along with patient advocates, community programs, and other key stakeholders. This role will oversee tracking of program activities to ensure action items are being addressed and prepare reports and presentations to promote the program through our system. The program manager will also assist with initiatives to educate the community about early onset cancers and help drive forward the development of patient-facing materials and website content.
