Job Description


The Public Safety Officer is required to protect the property of the State Museum and the rights of individuals against loss or injury due to disorderly acts, accidents, fires or other hazards. In this position the incumbent will:

  • Monitor cameras to detect safety hazards, and unusual activity; report specific problems to
designated responsible party.
  • Respond to emergencies, including emergency call back situations, either at the State Museum or where assigned when notified to respond. Perform duties related to emergency responses as outlined in the State Museum\'s Disaster Plan or as directed.
  • Complete required shift reports, as necessary, and keeps a file containing all pertinent
information that concerns Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) information.
  • Check in all employees and visitors at the employee entrance/exit, distribute, collect and
log keys and passes, and handle inquiries in person or by phone as required, when posted in the command center.
  • Secure the building and arm/disarm alarm systems, when assigned opening or closing shifts.
  • Direct employees and guests with authority, composure, and professionalism, in the event of
evacuation due to alarms or emergencies.
  • Assist with Facility Rentals Office as needed.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
A high school diploma and experience in fire prevention, safety or security activities.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be able to communicate well both verbally and in writing.
  • Must be a team player, have good interpersonal skills, and able to deal effectively with
visitors and staff members both in day-to-day and emergency environments.
  • Must be able to access all parts of the facility.
  • Requires the ability to prepare and review various administrative paperwork and be proficient
with a computer.
  • Requires telephone and face-to-face communications and extensive use of a radio and telephone.
  • Requires the ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
