Job Description

The City of Groton has an opening in our Public Works Department. We are currently searching for a fulltime Laborer which under the supervision of the Director of Public Works, performs a variety of moderate to heavy unskilled and semi-skilled diversified tasks related to the general maintenance of streets, sidewalks, highways, public grounds and facilities. Riding the sanitation trucks and assisting the collection of rubbish, recyclables and bulky waste of city residents are the primary functions of this position. Performing a variety of moderate to heavy unskilled and semi-skilled diversified tasks related to the general maintenance of streets, sidewalks, highways, public grounds and facilities is a secondary function of this position. WORK HOURS: The normal work hours for this position are 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (Spring/Summer) and/or 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (Fall/Winter), Monday through Friday but may vary depending on the operational needs of the City. QUALIFICATIONS: Include a high school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of six (6) months of related experience required. Working knowledge of the hazard and safety precautions of the trade. Must understand and have the ability to use common laboring tools and have some practical knowledge in properly caring for streets, sidewalks, highways and grounds. Must be able to climb ladders and work in confined spaces. Must frequently lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Preferred Qualifications Include: A valid CT Commercial Driver\xe2\x80\x99s License, Class B. ** Those who do not possess a Class B, Commercial Driver License and Medical Examiner\xe2\x80\x99s Certificate must obtain it within one (1) year of employment and maintain as a condition of employment. This is a union position. Rate of pay is $26.02 and is benefit eligible including participation in medical and dental insurance, the city Retirement Program and paid time off for vacation, sick and personal time and holidays.
