Summary:

The HH Radiation Safety Officer/Chief Diagnostic Medical Physicist is responsible for implementation, oversight, and management of the radiation safety program and diagnostic physics department throughout Hartford Hospital Facilities. The authority, responsibilities, and duties of the RSO are codified in State and Federal Regulation.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide radiation protection technical resources for HH and satellite locations associated with the HH radioactive materials license.
  • Oversee annual compliance and acceptance testing off all diagnostic imaging modalities. Maintain proper documentation to support compliance with ACR, TJC, and DPH regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct site planning, shielding designs, and shielding verification surveys.
  • Participate as key member of facilities CT dose protocol committees.
  • Provide medical physics technical resources for therapeutic procedures involving radioactive materials.
  • Advise leadership, physicians and staff on strategies and tactics relating to the technical and regulatory direction of the HH radiation safety programs.
  • Review and guide HH radiation safety programs and HH occupational monitoring programs to ensure the safety of the all HH employees, physicians, students, and visitors.
  • Promote radiation safety program compliance with applicable HHC policies and procedures, the HHC ALARA program, and all local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Interpret new and existing regulations; advise leadership on technical and regulatory issues regarding the strategic direction of the HH radiation safety programs and implement strategic measures as appropriate.
  • Work with facility leadership, individual principal investigators, and facility radiation safety staff for consistent HH program practices throughout the existing HHC radiation safety programs
  • Review and approve radiation human-use clinical research protocols to ensure compliance with HHC policies and procedures, the HHC ALARA Program, and all local, state and federal regulations.
  • Review the use of radioactive materials and use of radiation producing equipment at the HH facilities through review of facility audits and surveys, and facility radioactive materials licensing.
  • Review and guide the HH radiation safety training programs to ensure that only authorized and qualified individuals work with radioactive materials and radiation producing equipment.
  • Review and guide HH occupational monitoring programs to limit radiation exposure to radiation users and ensure compliance with HHC policies and procedures, ALARA Program, and local state and federal regulations.
  • Participate in the development and management of the HH radiation safety program operating budget.
  • Represent HH at various local, state and federal meetings, committees, and task groups to promote existing and new radiation safety programs and/or policies.
Qualifications

Education:
  • Graduate degree in medical physics or related field required.
Experience:
  • 10 years professional experience in medical physics and radiation safety program management, including 5 years as a medical Radiation Safety Officer. 10 years as a medical Radiation Safety Officer strongly preferred.
Licensure, Certification, Registration:

Board certification by the American Board of Radiology (ABR), the American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine (ABSNM) or, the American Board of Medical Physicists (ABMP), or the American Board of Health Physics (ABHP).
