Description

Performs technical work in the adjustment, testing, installation, modification, maintenance and troubleshooting and repair of radio transmitters, receivers and related communications equipment in mobile and fixed locations; understands, installs, maintains, and troubleshoots computers and related radio programs; installs and repairs radios, emergency lights, sirens, and other emergency related equipment in police vehicles; and performs other related duties as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

This class differs from that of the Radio Technician I in that the Radio Technician I independently installs, adjusts, tests, services, maintains, modifies and repairs radio transmitters and receivers, and works with communications-related computer programs and other related communications equipment; whereas the Radio Technician II supervises and participates in the adjustment, testing, installation, modification, maintenance and repair of radio transmitters, receivers and other related communications equipment, including performing difficult technical work.

Examples of Duties

The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.

Adjusts, tests, installs, modifies, maintains, and repairs radio transmitters, receivers, communications related computer programs, and related communications equipment; takes field strength measurements to determine operational coverage of transmitters; takes periodic frequency, power input, and modulation measurements of transmitters; keeps record of work performed in accordance with FCC requirements; inspects radio equipment for defects and makes adjustments and repairs as necessary; instructs operating personnel in the proper operation of radio communications equipment in accordance with applicable FCC rules and regulations and pertinent technical publications.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from a two-year program in electronics technology from an accredited community college or technical school and one (1) year of responsible experience involving the installation, maintenance, repair and modification of radio communications, RF microwave, computer operating systems and networks, and related equipment. Experience must include current commercial radio and computer technology.

License Requirement: Possession of a valid Hawaii State driver\'s license (Type 3).

Knowledge of: principles of radio communications and electronics; characteristics, functions, operation and capabilities of a variety of types of radio, computer and electronic equipment, testing equipment and tools used in adjusting and repairing radio equipment; FCC rules and regulations governing public safety radio service, computer operating systems and networking concepts.

Ability to: diagnose defects in radio equipment in the field or in the shop; diagnose system malfunctions; identify radio interference problems; apply appropriate electronic formulas involved in testing, troubleshooting, modifying, designing, calibrating, installing, maintaining and repairing radio equipment; learn the rules and regulations of the assigned department; understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties.

The above examination is being given on an open-competitive basis to establish an eligible list which shall be effective for not more than one year unless extended by the Director of Personnel Services.
