Registered Nurse First Assist (RNFA)Position Summary:The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) supports perioperative care as the first assistant to the surgeon, operating in an expanded perioperative role. This role combines expertise in nursing and surgical assistance to meet patient needs throughout the perioperative period. The RNFA is integral to the surgical team, contributing with scrub and circulating duties in the OR and upholding the Operating Room RN standards. This role requires comprehensive knowledge and skill in assisting surgical procedures, performing hemostasis, and handling tissue as directed by the surgeon.Primary (Essential) Duties:Technical Assistance to Surgeon:

  • Participate in pre-operative patient assessment.
  • Ensure hemostasis through various techniques (clamping, coagulation, suturing, etc.).
  • Provide adequate exposure using instruments, retractors, suction, sponging, and cavity packing.
  • Handle tissue under surgeon's direction.
  • Suture and tie knots securely, apply staples/clips, and approximate tissue as instructed.
  • Independently close subcutaneous and skin layers.
  • Place and suture drains as needed.
  • Stay within the defined scope of RNFA practice.
  • Document required experiences to maintain competency.
Patient & Family Support:
  • Identify patient and family educational needs, implementing teaching when possible.
  • Document patient care accurately and promptly.
Coordination & Quality Assurance:
  • Aid in developing RNFA scheduling systems.
  • Participate in Quality Improvement initiatives.
  • Update knowledge regularly for professional growth.
Operational Support:
  • Communicate effectively to foster patient and staff relationships and resolve conflicts.
  • Assist with cost containment, product evaluation, and supply ordering.
  • Fulfill minimum call requirements and provide education to other staff as needed.
Additional Duties:
  • Function in circulating/scrub roles when RNFA duties are not scheduled.
  • Assume other related duties to support surgical services as necessary.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing school.
  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in Idaho (or licensure eligible).
  • Completed RNFA certification course.
  • Minimum of 3 years of perioperative RN experience.
  • CNOR certification required.
  • Eligible for allied health privileges via medical credentialing.
Compensation:
  • Salary: Based on experience (0-30 years).
  • Work Schedule: Full-time, 80 hours per pay period; 7:30am - 5:00pm.
  • On-Call Requirement: 1 day/week and 1 weekend/month with $4.00/hr on-call pay.
  • Call Back Pay: Minimum of 2 hours at time-and-a-half.
  • Shift Differential: Based on majority hours worked:
  • Evening Shift (3pm 11:30pm): +8%
  • Night Shift (11pm 7:30am): +11%
  • No Weekend Differential
