Responsibilities
The Ambulatory Registered Nurse (RN) is a member of the surgical team in the clinical setting. The RN works in collaboration with surgeons, residents, nurses, Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistants (APPs) and other team members to provide high quality patient care. The RN assists with preoperative and postoperative management of the adult surgical patient. Provision of care includes but is not limited to; preoperative patient evaluation and counseling; interaction with the electronic environment facilitating the ordering of tests and/or consults and creation of the surgical listings. The RN provides extensive patient education pre/post surgery along with continuous reinforcement of the disease process and management recommendations. Coordination of multidisciplinary care includes telephone triage, coordination of care with other specialties such as other surgical departments or referring medical areas. The RN is responsible for the surgical scheduling and the overall facilitation of patient management through the surgical journey as directed by the surgeon. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential of all candidates. The applicant must be dedicated to patient education and have strong critical thinking skills. The RN must be organized, able to multi-task, and be self- driven working well in an autonomous yet team centered environment.
The registered nurse (RN) is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. The RN will function within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice provide a basis for the practice of the RN. The RN provides leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts. The RN delegates patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability and availability of resources. The RN possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and teaching; and may participate on committees or projects. A subset of employees may be required to drive their personal vehicle as a part of the responsibility of their role.
This role is eligible for TN sponsorship. Holders of F1 status eligible for post-completion OPT are welcome to apply. This role is NOT eligible to participate in the F-1 STEM OPT extension program. Successful sponsorship will require state licensure and completion of the VisaScreen or equivalent certification.
Qualifications
Student or graduate of an accredited, or those in the candidacy process, associate, or diploma nursing program, as recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA). If graduated from a nursing program that was not accredited by ACEN, CCNE, or NLN CNEA, at least one year of RN experience in an applicable care setting is required.
All entry-level associate degree registered nurses with a RN start date of April 1, 2020 and after must provide documented evidence of program completion of the baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program within five years from the last day of the month of the RN start date.
All entry-level associate degree registered nurses with a RN start date prior to April 1, 2020 must provide documented evidence of program completion of the baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program as stipulated by the degree requirement program in place at time of hire.
Additional Qualifications :
A minimum of one year surgical floor RN experience. Operating Room experience is helpful. Must have strong RN assessment skills with surgical patients and the ability to make independent decisions within RN scope of practice related to the surgical patient. RNs should have a strong interest in patient education and exhibit strong interpersonal communication skills. Applicant must problem solve with critical thinking skills and be comfortable navigating the electronic environment. RN must be self-motivated and work well with minimal direction however appropriately asking for guidance when necessary. The RN will assume responsibility for telephone interactions, in basket management, patient education and assume and establish effective collaborative relationships with multidisciplinary colleagues throughout the surgical practices.
One year of RN experience in an applicable care setting or one year of current LPN experience at Mayo Clinic is preferred.
Excellent communication skills (verbal and written). Experience working in a team environment. Computer skills required, prior experience with electronic medical record systems preferred. Ability to work flexible hours, which may include days, evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends and on-call. Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting. Demonstrated leadership, effective communicator, and excellent critical thinking skills.
License or Certification :
Must obtain prior to start date:
Current RN license by applicable state requirements.
Maintains current Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers from one of the following programs:
American Heart Association or American Red Cross. Positions that are not on campus may not require current Basic Life Support (BLS) competency as determined by the work area.
Additional state licensure(s) and/or specialty certification/training as required by the work area.
