Research Assistant 1

Cleveland, OH, United States

Job Description

POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under moderate supervision, perform research work in medical and related technical biomedical engineering. The research position will be focused on in vitro and in vivo studies of hemostatic nanoparticles that can treat bleeding dysfunctions. Specifically, these studies will include biochemical assays, viscoelastometric assays, microfluidic assays of bleeding dysfunction and rescue in vitro, and small animal models of bleeding injury (and its treatment) in vivo. The research is supported by US Department of Defense. The position supports translational research and technology development in the biomedical area, focused on a critical and clinical pathological problem of bleeding, and grows the education and research mission of Case Western Reserve University at department, school, and university levels. This position will work with animals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS * Perform studies using blood analysis instruments and laboratory assays (biochemical assays, viscoelastometric assays, microfluidic assays of bleeding dysfunction and rescue in vitro). The assays include but not limited to fluorescence microscopy assisted microfluidic experiments for analysis of blood clot formation and clot dissolution, rotational thromboelastometry and thromboelastography assisted viscoelastometric analysis of blood clots, UV-Visible spectrophotometry assisted analysis of thrombin and fibrin generation relevant to blood clot formation, high resolution microscopy of platelets, RBCs and fibrin associated with clot morphology. (30%)

  • Perform studies of animal preclinical models of bleeding and clotting, to test hemorrhage control technologies developed in the laboratory. The preclinical models include mouse models of tail-clip bleeding and rat models of liver hemorrhage, where the animals are treated with bleeding mitigation therapeutic technologies developed in the laboratory, and reduction of bleeding is monitored along with recording animal vitals of blood pressure, oxygen saturation and temperature. (20%)
  • Perform analysis of blood and plasma samples. Human blood will be obtained from the biorepository core of Case Western Reserve University and processed (e.g. centrifugation, dilution, drug treatment etc.) in vitro to simulate disease-associated conditions, and then treatment of such conditions with technologies developed in the laboratory, will be tested in vitro using methods described in #1 above. (20%)
  • Maintain study results and records from microfluidic studies with blood samples and nanoparticles, and other experiments, and present research data at lab meetings and conferences. (10%)
  • Maintain Bioflux microfluidic systems, fluorescence microscope test equipment and other equipment utilized in experiments. (10%)
  • Order laboratory supplies (ex: tissue plasminogen activator human). (8%)
NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
