GENERAL SUMMARY:
The laboratory of I\xc3\xb1igo Landa, PhD, at Brigham and Women\xe2\x80\x99s Hospital (BWH) Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Hypertension & Harvard Medical School, is recruiting a Research Assistant to start immediately. Dr. Landa\xe2\x80\x99s lab studies basic and translational aspects of thyroid cancers, with a focus on advanced disease, using a variety of techniques in human samples, cell systems and animal models.
This is a full-time Research Assistant position in an exciting scientific environment. Our aim is to produce scientific knowledge of the highest quality while achieving a healthy work-life balance. Salary and benefits will be aligned with institutional policies and commensurate with experience.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will be responsible for contributing to various aspects of laboratory research. S/he will work under the supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI) and postdoctoral fellows. S/he will have opportunities to learn specific techniques lab researchers and core facilities, and to benefit from the rich scientific environment at the Longwood Medical Campus.
A list of the specific duties comprises:
- Design and perform research laboratory experiments in the field of cancer biology, under the supervision of the PI, including:
o Mouse handling and monitoring
o Preparation and analysis of DNA and RNA (isolation, PCR, qPCR, etc.)
o Isolation and analysis of proteins (western blotting, etc.)
o Cell culture and basic in vitro assays
- Data recording and analysis, keeping detailed laboratory records, generation of tables and graphics to summarize the results.
- Preparation of laboratory reagents and chemicals
- Maintenance of lab supplies, inventory and equipment, including communication with outside vendors
- Preservation of established departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control
- Discussion of research program and results regularly with the PI
- Performance of other duties and responsibilities as directed
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
None
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Normal specimen laboratory. May have exposure to infection materials and hazardous substances, odors, noise, under controlled conditions. Possible visual strain and hand strain encountered while performing specimen-processing or while using computer terminals. Work requires frequent standing, walking and occasional lifting or carrying supplies.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree required.
Prior lab experience strongly preferred.
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
- Some experience with mammalian cell culture and basic molecular biology techniques
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently
- Capacity to interact courteously and effectively with co-workers, research staff, hospital personnel and external contacts
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail for experiment design and basic lab managing
- Willingness to learn new techniques and to assist on multiple projects
- Ability to identify potential or on-going problems and proactively help with troubleshooting
- Basic computer skills, including word processing and spreadsheet applications
- Previous experience of working with murine models is desired but not essential (appropriate training will be provided)
- Ability to commit to a minimum of one year
