Description of WorkThe Department of Entomology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is seeking a broadly trained entomologist who will address the management of arthropods that transmit pathogens that affect humans and animals. The research assistant professor will contribute to a research team that focuses on chemical strategies to reduce arthropod-borne pathogens and prevent human and animal/livestock community disease transmission. The incumbent will be responsible for the development of next-generation bioinformatics and sequencing platforms for the de novo design of high-throughput in vivo and in vitro assays to screen large chemical repositories for mosquito-active compounds to reduce community transmission of malaria. As part of a faculty team in the Department of Entomology, the incumbent is expected to develop a competitive research program and actively pursue external funding sources. The incumbent is also expected to participate in mentoring undergraduate and graduate students and contribute to the undergraduate and graduate education programs (i.e., bioinformatics course) in the Department of Entomology. The incumbent is expected to collaborate with established institutions in African countries and with public health teams to provide consultation and expertise in arthropod-borne disease programs, such as public outreach and education, media inquiries, public health case investigation and emergencies, and/or management of arthropod-borne diseases. It is expected that the incumbent will publish in peer-reviewed journals.The research assistant professor will contribute to the integrated research land-grant mission of the home unit and IANR, as an effective scholar and citizen, including supporting student recruitment and IANR science literacy.
