Our Telomere Lab studies the genetic basis of disease with a focus on disorders caused by telomere dysfunction including cancer. The research includes handling samples from human subjects participating in a long-standing research study as well as cellular and animal models of the diseases we study. We are seeking a Research Specialist who will have the opportunity to receive mentorship and work as part of a vibrant research team. In addition, career academic advancement opportunities are available through this position. Will be responsible for oversight and training of more junior technicians and will participate in specimen processing and performing established laboratory assays with the supervision of the faculty investigator.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

• Compiles, analyzes and interprets basic research data using various computer software applications.
• Handle isolation and preservation of material procured from human subjects.
• Performs basic molecular biology techniques including cell culture.
• Perform multi-step assays with high precision and reproducibility including flow cytometry and fluorescence in situ hybridization.
• Perform where needed basic mouse colony handling and breeding.
• Develops experimental design and has primary responsibility for planning, implementation, evaluation and interpretation of results. The design process may be in collaboration with the PI or completed independently.
• Oversees and assures laboratory compliance with regulatory requirements and JHU standards, policies and procedures.
• Track molecular and genetic data longitudinally.
• Experiments will include techniques in molecular biology (PCR, primer design, real-time PCR, subcloning, DNA and RNA purification), tissue culture, electrophoresis, immunohistochemistry, and in situ hybridization.

• Perform assay development for a molecular epidemiology laboratory. This may include PCR, real-time PCR, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, Northern and Southern blot and in situ hybridization, among other techniques.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Must be familiar with the operation of laboratory equipment such as PCR machines, real-time PCR machines, centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balance, incubator, spectrophotometer, light microscope, imaging systems and laminar flow hoods.
• Must be organized and familiar with aseptic technique.
• Must be familiar with theory behind experiments and apply analytical skills to interpret experiments, including positive and negative controls.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor\'s Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
• One year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
• Master\'s degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
