Overview

The chemotherapy infusion RN cares for patients with cancer, hematology disorders and other medical conditions. They administer chemotherapy, IV fluids, blood products and supportive medications. The RN will display safe handling of antineoplastic medications. The RN will monitor various lab results such as ANC and creatinine to assist the provider in determining need for treatment regimen changes or other interventions. The RN must possess good communication skills to interact with patients, family members, and medical colleagues. The RN will educate patients regarding their treatment options, procedures, side effects and management of their chemotherapy or immunotherapy, and self-care. The RN will provide emotional support to patients and their family. The RN must demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills in intravenous access, the management of central venous catheters, management of treatment for anaphylaxis and extravasation, and obtain laboratory specimens.

Responsibilities

Practices under the tenets of Centra\'s Professional Practice Model

Plans, coordinates, manages, and documents the care provided to assigned patients

Delegates to care providers according to the ANA Principles of Nurse Staffing

Thinks critically as evidenced by appropriate clinical decision-making and prioritization

Leads, communicates and collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to plan patient care

Creates and maintains an environment that protects patients from harm

Adheres to National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG)

Participates in initiatives resulting from nurse-sensitive quality indicators and/or unit-based quality metrics

Ensures appropriate patient and/or caregiver education with utilization of applicable resources

Promotes and sustains a culture reflective of Centra\'s best practices

Operationalizes change resulting from evidence-based practice or research

Operationalizes unit-based action plans to achieve or exceed service excellence benchmarks

Participates in service recovery and uses appropriate resources during complex situations

Handles conflict resolution in an appropriate, timely, and consistent manner

Identifies personal contributions to unit-based cascading goals

Admits, transfers and/or discharges patients safely and efficiently

Uses resources (e.g., time, people, supplies, etc.) cost effectively

Engages in own professional development as evidenced by self assessment and attainment of degrees, certifications, and continuing education

Contributes to providing a supportive environment that is conducive to learning for all students from all academic programs

Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required Education: Graduate of an accredited Nursing Program

Required Experience: One (1) year of external nursing experience or completion of Nurse Residency Program (NRP) for new nurses with less than six (6) months of experience

Required Certifications and Licensures: Hold a current, active license as a registered nurse in Virginia or hold a current multistate licensure privilege as a registered nurse. BLS Certification within the first six (6) months of employment and maintain BLS Certification. The RN should join the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) and pass the Chemotherapy / Biotherapy Certificate course within 4 weeks of employment at the Cancer Center. This certificate should be renewed every 2 years. The RN should take the Cancer Basics course within the first 8 weeks of employment. The RN should obtain oncology nurse certification (OCN) within 18 months of hire. Recertification of OCN should be maintained every 4 years.

Effective April 1, 2024, candidates seeking employment in this role at Centra must possess a valid and current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (AHA BLS Provider or AHA BLS Instructor) course completion card. Proof of certification will be mandatory prior to commencing employment. Both AHA and RQI cards are acceptable forms of certification.
