Job Summary

Provides comprehensive nursing care to patients during all phases of air and/or ground medical transport. Collaborates with other members of the health care team and uses clinical judgment skills to diagnose and treat the patient responses to actual or potential health conditions. Assesses, monitors, detects, plans, and takes appropriate action to prevent potential physiological complications associated with specific health problems and/or medical treatment.

Essential Functions

  • Assesses and monitors the overall needs of patients / family / significant others. Ensures that required documentation is performed in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Develops / maintains an individualized patient plan of care with the patient and consistent with patient / family changing needs / goals, reflecting the full scope of practice. Delivers care in a manner that preserves patient autonomy, dignity and rights. Identifies, facilitates, and evaluates outcomes of nursing care for an individual patient or group of patients.
  • Complies with all clinical and didactic training as required by Aero Med/NFAM or Neonatal Services. Evaluates patients\' and family educational needs; develops and implements appropriate teaching strategies.
  • Provides evidence-based nursing care consistent with the plan of care, guidelines of care, physician orders, and in accordance with health system policies, procedures, and ANA / regulatory standards. Communicates with other members of the health care team in order to ensure continuity and coordination of care. Acts as a patient / family advocate. Acts as a resource and additional clinical support to bedside nurses at SHGR and other community hospitals within the state of Michigan.
  • Demonstrates a high standard of moral and ethical behavior. Formulates decisions and actions based on ethical principles, using the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses to guide practice. Advocates for privacy, confidentiality and security of patient, staff and organization data.
  • Articulates the professional nursing role to the patient, family and health team members. Assumes an autonomous leadership role and delegates appropriately to support staff to facilitate safe, quality patient care in a cost-effective manner. Possess the ability to function effectively in and out of the hospital environment, with limited supportive equipment, personnel and when necessary independently of the physician.
  • Maintains all transport equipment in a state of constant readiness. Checks all equipment at the beginning of each shift, noting any discrepancy or malfunction. Should be able to troubleshoot all equipment, make certain that malfunctions are promptly reported and repaired. For Aero Med/NFAM, completes rotor wing checklist and ensures that aircraft is fully stocked and ready at the beginning of shift. For Neonatal Services, transport role encompasses pediatric patients requiring transport (by ground or air) to Helen DeVos Children\'s Hospital.
  • Participates in ongoing process improvement activities through the application of clinical paths, QI processes, and other related activities. Actively participates and supports ongoing unit education. Attends transport meetings. Acts as a super user when necessary. If certified as an NRP instructor, may assist with and teach NRP classes.
Qualifications
  • Required Bachelor\'s Degree in Nursing must be obtained within 7 years for those who start in this RN role on or after January 1, 2013. Registered nurses currently employed in the NICU at HDVCH are not required to obtain their BSN if their hire date is before January 1, 2013.
  • Required Bachelor\'s Degree in Nursing must be obtained within 4 years for those who start in this role on or after January 1, 2017 (Spectrum Health Grand Rapids Hospitals, Zeeland Hospital, United Hospital and Kelsey Hospital).
  • Successful completion of a competency-based orientation program Required
  • 2 years of relevant experience Critical Care and/or Emergency Experience for Aero Med/NFAM only Required
  • 6 months of relevant experience Successful completion of the NICU RN orientation for Neonatal Services Transport only Required
  • Flight/transport nursing experience Preferred
