Job Description


$3,000 Seasonal Incentive - Eligible seasonal parks laborers must work up to 40 hours a week, as needed, to be qualified for the attendance incentive. Eligible temporary employees who miss no more than 4 days (32 equivalent hours) of scheduled work will receive a lump sum payment of $3,000 (less any taxes) at the conclusion of employment. Tardiness and no-call/no-show will count as a missed day. The incentive will not be paid if the employee is terminated for cause. Seasonal employment is defined as not less than 90 days and not longer than 119 days.Perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and operation of the Borough\'s buildings, grounds, fields, open spaces and parks. Weekend and shift work will be required.Examples of Duties

  • Perform custodial work such as required and assigned, including: change light bulbs and fluorescent tubes; replenish supplies; sweep; empty ash cans; wash windows and walls; clean rain gutters; clean public restrooms and Borough facilities.
  • Collect and dispose of solid waste from buildings and grounds; pick up litter from premises.
  • Mow and maintain parks and open space areas such as baseball and soccer fields; pull weeds and maintain the flower beds; playgrounds, clean and maintain tennis courts and nets.
  • Drag ball fields; line fields for games
  • Inspect, wash, and perform routine maintenance of park drinking fountains and restrooms.
  • Wash, paint, and repair or replace park tables and slabs
  • Perform minor semi-skilled interior building maintenance such as painting, plumbing, carpentry, and other unskilled and semi-skilled trades work.
  • Perform routine maintenance on lawn and power equipment.
  • Operate mowers, weed trimmer, jack hammers, trucks, steam cleaners, buffers, pressure washers, and other equipment as needed.
  • Use hand and power tools such as saws, drills, hammers, snow blowers, pumps, brush cutters, chippers, generators, compressors, and various other equipment when required to perform a task.
  • Assist in setting up and taking down equipment and prepare facilities for various recreational programs.
  • Install and maintain goal posts and nets for sports facilities, including soccer, volleyball, baseball, softball, tennis and basketball.
  • Interact regularly with the general public and Borough staff.
  • Assist in the construction of new parks facilities, including clearing, grading, drainage, and foundation work.
ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES:
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
QualificationsGeneral knowledge of parks, facilities, and ball field maintenance and operations is preferred. Experience and skills in power/non-power tool applications, basic plumbing, and mechanics (basic vehicle and small engine preventative maintenance) preferred. Willingness to perform various job-related duties as situations require, a strong sense of teamwork, and the ability to work cooperatively with others. Knowledge of or the ability to learn departmental policies and procedures, including all safety rules and regulations. Must have physical stamina and endurance. Must have work organization skills, the ability to multi-task and work independently with little or no supervision.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or equivalent.LICENSES:
Valid State of Alaska driver\'s license with a driving record acceptable to the Borough\'s insurance carrier.Any combination of related education and/or related experience will be considered if the candidate possesses the demonstrated ability.Requirements*Pre-employment Drug Testing is requiredMust be able to hear. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, equipment or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch; and taste or smell. Each of the listed activities also requires standing, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, climbing on stools and ladders, and routinely lift and carry items and boxes up to seventy (70) pounds.Frequent outdoor work and exposure to inclement weather and rigorous conditions. Crawling, bending, stooping in confined areas. Shoveling or sweeping snow, and/or dirt from walkways. Sweeping and picking up litter.
