Job Description


The senior director of Elementary School Education collaboratively oversees the Elementary School Education Department with other directors of Elementary School Education. This position is based at the ASD Education Center and reports to the Deputy Chief of Schools. This position requires a valid Alaska teaching or administrative certificate and has a retirement association with the Alaska Teachers\xe2\x80\x99 Retirement System (TRS).

Job Requirements
The following are required: * A master\xe2\x80\x99s degree in school administration with emphasis in elementary education.

  • A valid Alaska type B administrative certificate.
  • Three years of elementary teaching experience and unit program development.
  • Knowledge, background, and training in the methods of instruction, supervision, and management of elementary programs and curriculum.
  • Ability to articulate various elementary programs to the Anchorage School Board and community agencies and knowledge of law in due process.
  • Demonstrated leadership in the development and implementation of regular and alternative programs and a commitment to quality education and high standards of achievement.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in speaking and writing with all levels of management, supervision, and other personnel.
  • Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with others.
The following are preferred: * Three years of experience as an elementary administrator with demonstrated ability to facilitate and lead district initiatives.

Essential Job Functions * Works collaboratively with all directors of Elementary School Education to run the elementary education office.
  • Supervises principals of area-designated elementary schools
  • Works with the directors of Middle, High, and Choice Schools to improve articulation of K-12 programs.
  • Provides leadership of one of five elementary school groups; West, East, North, South, or Central.
  • Works collaboratively with the directors of Elementary Teaching and Learning to implement and assess new programs, coordinate curriculum adoptions, and implement the Reads Act.
  • Articulates the elementary school program to the Anchorage School Board and community agencies and promotes public relations/public information among elementary schools.
  • Recommends elementary school principal transfers, appointments, and assignments and promotes professional growth through principal evaluation and professional development.
  • Organizes and conducts elementary school principal meetings to ensure consistency in the implementation of district goals.
  • Reviews Elementary Education budgets and assists ASD staff in the preparation of the financial plan.
  • Allocates Elementary Education staff to the units within budgetary constraints and administers the division budget by monitoring expenditures and recommending budget adjustments.
  • Supervises the evaluations of elementary principals, coordinates program evaluation and testing, assesses test scores, and uses data to drive instructional methods and practices.
  • Works collaboratively with other directors of Elementary Education in all aspects of elementary education planning, supervision, training, and leading of the division.
  • Maintains working knowledge of school law.
  • Maintains currency in teaching techniques and methods of instruction at the elementary school level.
  • Provides leadership in coordinating elementary school activities districtwide.
  • Attends school board meetings.
  • Provides information to the capital projects division to ensure compatibility between the elementary school program and projects under construction.
Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Work Environment
Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
