This position will provide support to the Uranium Processing Facility (UPF) located at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

UPF will be built by 2025 for $6.5 billion and will be a first-of-its-kind complex for enriched uranium operations in support of Y-12 missions. UPF is one of the Department of Energy\'s largest investments in Tennessee since the Manhattan Project and one of the National Nuclear Security Administration\'s largest construction projects. When complete, UPF will: replace a 70-year-old facility with modern buildings, reduce operational costs and energy consumption, improve worker safety, and provided enriched uranium capabilities well into the future.

The UPF Project has multiple work schedules that are subject to change and may require employees to work overtime and/or nightshift when a business need arises. Most of the UPF project works on a 9-80 schedule with every other Friday off. Start times are flexible but the standard workweek is: Monday - Thursday from 7:00 am to 4:30 pm. The schedule on working Fridays is: 7:00 am - 3:30 pm. Work schedule and overtime are to be approved in advance by supervisors.

Eligibility for this position requires US citizenship; the successful candidate must provide proof of US citizenship in order to obtain badge access to the site. Candidate must complete security questionnaire and successfully clear site access requirements check. All employees are subject to and agree to random drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment. Must be able to obtain a security clearance, as applicable.

Position Summary:

The Fire Protection Engineer will be working as part of the Fire Protection team designing and/or procuring the plant fire protection systems as well as providing construction support. Prepare technical reports and studies and design documentation, performing calculations using engineering software, providing construction support and preparing specifications for complex mechanical equipment and supporting systems. The ideal candidate will have solid experience in fire protection system design and construction; and will be capable of developing design documents, including piping and instrument diagrams and equipment data sheets, that incorporate the applicable design requirements. The candidate shall have a working knowledge of the IBC and NFPA standards including but not limited to NFPA 13, NFPA 72, NFPA 801, NFPA 101, and NFPA 241. You will be interfacing and coordinating with other engineering/construction disciplines and the client in the development of the design and installation of the systems. Experience in design, procurement, and installation of fire protection equipment per DOE and National Standards is required.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate detailed phases of engineering/construction work for a global business unit usually in one discipline in a project or staff group.
  • Ability to work independently, use engineering judgment, and devise new approaches to solving problems.
  • Perform work that involves conventional engineering practices but may also include complex features such as resolving conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials, and/or difficult coordination requirements.
  • Perform work using Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs), appropriate 2-D and 3-D computer-aided design and computer-aided engineering (CAD and CAE) tools. Other duties include planning, coordinating, or preparing equipment or work specifications, evaluations, and award recommendations for equipment including. Develop and revise piping and instrument diagrams, formal calculations, and equipment datasheets and specifications in completing the detailed design for the system, including equipment selection.
  • Design the system and specify the equipment to meet the applicable requirements.
  • Procure the equipment in accordance with applicable QA requirements.
  • In addition, it will be required that the candidate prepare communications to vendors and clients, review bid analyses and make recommendations, and prepare or assist in the preparation of studies, designs, reports, or proposals.
  • Perform or assist in the performance of problem analysis and original design.
  • Prepare and/or assist in the preparation of cost estimates, quantity take-offs and staffing requirements for proposals, forecasts, and change orders.
  • Review and disposition of field change notices and non-conformance reports.
  • Review the coordination and status of vendor submittals.
  • Provide construction support for all phases of the project in conjunction with NFPA 241 requirements.
  • Support the creation of a work environment that fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.
  • Support the associated safety analyses and hazards evaluations. In addition, it will be required that the candidate have excellent communication skills (both verbal and written), can be the \xe2\x80\x9cface\xe2\x80\x9d of Bechtel by promoting our leadership, quality, and safety values to external partners including vendors, construction companies, and other subcontractors.
Qualifications and Skills:

Basic Qualifications:
  • Level I - BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology (or approved equivalent) from an accredited university or college with a minimum of 6 years of related experience or in lieu of education 12 years of relevant fire protection experience.
  • Level II - BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology (or approved equivalent) from an accredited university or college with a minimum of 9 years of related experience or in lieu of education 15 years of relevant fire protection experience.
  • Must be a US citizen.
  • Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check which includes verification of employment and education Must be able to obtain a site security badge for access to the worksite.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Understanding of construction roles, practices, and economics.
  • Practical work experience in equipment design and procurement.
  • Ability to utilize office automation tools effectively.
  • Knowledge of industry and regulatory guides, codes, and standards, broad knowledge of the application of Fire Protection engineering design principles.
  • Nuclear experience in working with procedures meeting quality assurance programs such as ASME-NQA-1.
  • Knowledge of engineering planning and control methods including computerized methods.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and the use HASS (Hydraulic Analyzer for Sprinkler Systems).
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Professional Engineers license in Mechanical or Fire Protection Engineering.
  • Previous UPF experience.
  • Knowledge of Bechtel Corporate guides and standards and relevant CAD, CAE, and Bechtel standard computer applications.
  • Experience with the Bechtel Procurement System (BPS).
  • Understanding of ASME NQA-1 requirements for procurement.
  • MS degree in Engineering (Mechanical or related) with four (4) years of progressive related experience.
  • Previous experience in front-end fire protection design and equipment selection for nuclear waste processing, nuclear, or nuclear chemical facilities.
  • Construction support experience.
