ROLE
We are seeking an experienced Senior Paralegal to support the Department of Justice (DOJ) U.S. Attorney\xe2\x80\x99s Office (USAO) District of South Carolina, at the Columbia Office. Your scope of work focuses on providing comprehensive legal and administrative support and ensuring efficient case management and trial preparation.

I. Legal Research & Information Management

  • Use a variety of automated legal research tools (e.g., LexisNexis and Westlaw)
  • Leverage public information databases (e.g. PACER)
  • Employ other automated resources for legal matters
  • Use established databases to perform data searches, report design, and other data retrieval assignments
II. Case Preparation
  • Participate in assigned areas of criminal or civil proceedings (e.g., electronic discovery)
  • Prepare and maintain a variety case-related documents (e.g., discovery letters, exhibit lists, witness information, etc.)
  • Provide a variety of legal assistance
  • Perform technical work requiring specialized knowledge of rules, processes, procedures, and practices
  • Support legal activities in Federal Court
  • Receive, review, and organize investigative material and documentary evidence received from investigative agencies
  • Create notes of deficiencies in case materials (e.g., missing documents, conflicting statements, and requests for further investigation to investigation personnel)
  • Conduct limited investigations at the pre-trial stage
  • Maintain regular contact with law enforcement agencies to ensure cooperation in assigned cases
  • Provide case organization and management in anticipation of trial or court presentation
  • Prepare and organize exhibits containing a variety of visual material (e.g., statistical charts and photographs)
  • Compile, organize, and index various discovery and evidence exhibits for trial
  • Develop and compile jury instructions to assist AUSA in preparing for trial
  • Work closely with assigned attorney(s) to ensure material is efficiently arranged
III. Trial Support & Exhibit Management
  • Provide the attorney with necessary legal documents, information, exhibits, or witnesses during court proceedings
  • Prepare exhibits for trial that involve a wide range of visual materials (e.g., charts, diagrams, photographs, and models)
  • Maintain accounting systems for materials to be used as exhibits in grand jury proceedings and trials
  • Prepare lists and tables to correlate the exhibits with grand jury transcripts
  • Keep a strict account of the exhibits used in such proceedings
IV. Administrative & Technical Support
  • Advise attorney and legal staff on preparing, presenting, and maintaining administrative legal documents
  • Organize legal documents (e.g., discovery letters, exhibit lists, jury instructions, and subpoenas)
  • Perform a variety of administrative duties in support of the assigned AUSAs
  • Use one or more types of personal computer (PC) based software
  • Develop methods for automating reports, statistical data, text, and graphics
V. Communication & Coordination
  • Serve as contact person for assigned cases
  • Provide information and assistance concerning status or relevant procedural issues
  • Exercise discretion and judgment in determining what information may be provided and to whom
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
  • Proficiency in legal research tools (e.g., Westlaw, Lexis-Nexis)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong organization skills
BACKGROUND
  • Civil litigation experience preferred
  • Detail-oriented and highly analytical
  • Professional and social; can interact with all levels of staff
EDUCATION
  • Associate degree or equivalent required
  • Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree preferred
