Job Summary This position is a trained law enforcement position. It enables the deputy to enforce law and order in rural or unincorporated areas of the county and to serve legal processes of courts. Deputies patrol the courthouse, guard the court, grand jury; and often escort defendants. Essential Functions Transport or escort prisoners and defendants to courtrooms, prisons/jails, medical facilities, and other locations as directed. Drive vehicles or patrol specific areas to detect law violators, issue citations, and make arrests. Execute arrest warrants, locating and taking persons into custody. Investigate illegal or suspicious actions. Provide needed assistance or medical aid to other law enforcement or emergency medical personnel. Question individuals entering secured areas to determine their business, directing and rerouting individuals, as necessary. Record daily activities and submit logs and other related reports and paperwork to appropriate authority. Serve statements of claim, subpoenas, summonses, jury summonses, order to pay alimony, and other court orders. Take control of accident scenes to maintain traffic flow, to assist accident victims, and to investigate causes. Verify that the proper legal charges have been made against law offenders. Patrol and guard courthouses, grand jury rooms, or assigned areas in order to provide security, enforce laws, maintain order, and arrest violators. Locate and confiscate real or personal property, as directed by court order. Manage jail operations and tend to jail inmates. Additional Responsibilities Demonstrate knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, and procedures to promote effective protection of people, data, property, and institutions. Demonstrate knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedure, government regulations, and the democratic political process. Demonstrate a knowledge of human behavior and the ability to work with human differences fairly. Demonstrate active listening and good judgment related to the public and actions. Ability to speak to individuals and groups to convey information in a professional manner. Maintain coordination and physical fitness to enable the ability to accomplish work tasks. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required for Job Performance High School graduate or GED. Public safety training as required for position. Ability to speak and write in the English language. Knowledge of the geography of the county for assigned duty. Demonstrated ability to think critically under pressure and follow established procedure. A valid driver\'s license. Working Conditions/Physical Demands This work is often performed at the direction of the Sheriff at different times of the day, evening, and night. This position requires a commitment to work on any day and at any time as directed. This work may require physical exertion, running, walking, standing for periods of time, and lifting items up to 50 pounds without accommodation. This position requires the ability to work with others and to communicate effectively with other officers and the general public.
