The Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS) is the statewide professional association for physicians and medical students, supporting 25,000 members. The Sound Engineer oversees the technical aspects of audio production and ensures high-quality audio recordings and post-production for both audio and video-with-audio features. The sound engineer is available to work on all NEJM Group podcasts and other audio features.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for set up and operation of recording equipment, including microphones, audio interfaces, mixers, and headphones. Ensures optimal audio levels and clarity during recording sessions with hosts/guests.
  • Edits raw audio files to remove background noise, glitches, or any unwanted elements. Mixes and balances audio tracks, adjusting volume levels, equalization, and other audio effects to achieve a cohesive and professional sound.
  • Collaborates with NEJM illustrators and videographers on sound design for NEJM in-house animated and filmed videos.
  • Works with editors and production teams to handle the sound design and develop soundscapes for in-house videos and podcasts across NEJM Group.
  • Records sound and helps with sound equipment set-up during in-house video shoots.
  • Responsible for post-production activities including adding intros, outros, transitions, and music to podcast episodes and other audio elements. Implements sound design elements and special effects to enhance the listening experience.
  • Oversees, monitors and maintains consistent audio quality throughout all podcast episodes. Address audio discrepancies, distortions, or any technical issues that may impact the overall quality.
  • Organizes and manages audio files efficiently, ensuring proper naming conventions and archiving practices for easy retrieval and storage.
  • Works closely with podcast hosts, producers, and other team members to understand the vision and style of the podcast. Collaborates to achieve the desired audio output and ensure the podcast aligns with NEJM Group brand identity.
  • Identifies and troubleshoots technical issues related to audio equipment, recording software, or any other tools used in the podcast production process.
  • Maintains and updates audio equipment regularly to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
  • Responsible for staying up to date with the latest podcasting trends, audio production techniques, and tools. Implements best practices to enhance audio quality and overall production value.
  • Assists with publishing and distribution tasks, such as uploading episodes to podcast hosting platforms, updating show notes, and managing metadata.
Required Experience
  • Demonstrated experience in audio engineering, sound design, or podcast production.
  • Proficiency in using digital audio workstations (DAWs) such as Adobe Audition, Pro Tools, or similar software.
  • Strong understanding of audio equipment, microphone types, and audio processing tools.
  • Knowledge of audio formats, sample rates, and audio compression techniques.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to maintain consistency in audio quality.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work well and collaborate within a team.
  • Proven time management skills to meet tight production deadlines.
  • Creativity in sound design and ability to add unique elements to enhance storytelling and other audio goals.
  • Ability to do video editing and add sound to videos strongly desired.
