Job Description


Summary

Under general, performs security work of moderate difficulty conducting criminal/medial investigations of complex cases, including; homicide, sexual assault, dangerous crimes against children and white collar crimes.

Essential Job Functions

  • Testify as an expert witness for complex criminal cases.
  • Conduct complete reinvestigation of Homicide cases as required by ABA Standards.
  • Attend and critique postmortem examinations.
  • Serve as primary evidence custodian (gather evidence, maintain chain of custody, maintain evidence log; write and review evidence handling procedures).
  • Prepare comprehensive investigation plans and reports.
  • Prepare/execute legal documents resulting in evidence gathering and producing witnesses.
  • Locate and interview key witnesses; including law enforcement officers, civilians, and expert witnesses.
  • Identify, interview and retain appropriate expert witnesses (e.g., medical examiners, DNA experts, fingerprint examiners, and digital forensic experts).
  • Read, understand, and interpret Cellebrite information.
  • Evaluate and recreate crime scene investigations (including use of sophisticated still and video camera equipment).
  • Understand and apply the principles of complex homicide investigations.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of investigative principles, practices, methods, techniques and equipment.
  • Knowledge of recording and evaluating the practices and principles of investigative work.
  • Knowledge of rules of evidence and disclosure in criminal cases.
  • Knowledge of criminal statutes and affirmative defenses.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Skill as an expert witness in police and homicide investigations.
  • Skill in analyzing Cellebrite data.
  • Skill in relationship building.
  • Skill in interviewing and interrogation.
  • Skill in effective communication (verbally and in writing).
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public.
Desirable Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED; AND two years of college or university training in law enforcement, criminal justice, pathology, forensic medicine, or a closely related field; AND previously recognized by courts as an expert witness in complex criminal investigations and homicide investigations; AND at least 8 years of experience investigating complex/homicide cases; AND at least 500 hours of training in investigating complex cases; OR any combination of relevant education and experience; AND valid driver\'s license.
