We have a wonderful opportunity for a Senior Accountant Analyst to be part of our Finance and Accounting Department here at Bloodworks NW! The incumbent will provide expertise and accounting support for our Research Institute as well as our Development Department with emphasis on collaboration; timely and reliable reporting; and meaningful analysis. Using specialist knowledge of techniques, Uniform Guidance, and GAAP, assure that sponsor reimbursement requests and reporting is supported by appropriate authorizations and expenditures. This is vital to both fostering new opportunities and maintaining continued support of basic, translational, and clnical research by our accomplished faculty and research staff. Reporting to the Assistant Controller and working closely with the Program Manager of Grants and Contracts, prepares summaries of accounting data to meet the needs of various audiences.

Principal Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

General Accounting

  • Perform comprehensive analysis of various balance sheet and income statement accounts.
  • Assist in all aspects of Accounting Department functions as needed including but not limited to ad hoc reporting, analysis, and special projects.
  • Analyze research cores cost for internal/external charge rates development.
  • Maintain and support philanthropic grants\' reporting for reliable stewardship of all funds with donor designations.
  • Analyze accounting transactions identifying relevant standards or policies and determines how transactions should be recorded in compliance with GAAP.
Grant Accounting
  • Evaluate, monitor, and audit grant and contract expenditures ensuring the expense is allowable under the terms and conditions of the grant/contract and federal Uniform Guidance.
  • Ensure financial records reflect the proper documentation for grant/contract expenditures.
  • Process PARS (Personnel Activity Reports) for proper allocation of payroll costs to grants.
  • Compute and record monthly indirect costs attributable to grant and contract cost centers.
  • Assist the Grants and Contracts Program Manager and PIs (Faculty) as needed to develop budgets for project proposals.
  • Produce and distribute grant reports and analyses monthly, ensuring accuracy and completeness of reports.
  • Update process flows and flow charts for policies and procedures for internal control purposes.
  • Assist with yearly grant Uniform Guidance audit, including preparation of audit papers.
  • Work with grant awarding entities to ensure proper reporting and payment of funding.
  • Manage subawards to ensure compliance with OMB circulars and other government regulations prior to payment processing.
Other
  • Assist in projects related to system improvements and enhancements.
  • Support the development and implementation of internal controls, financial reporting and accounting policies and procedures.
  • Understand and keep up to date on new accounting pronouncements.
  • Fully participate as a member of the Finance & Accounting and Bloodworks teams by ensuring interactions with colleagues promote collaboration and continued communication.
Requirements

Education & Experience
  • Bachelor\'s degree in accounting, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum five years\' experience in general accounting
  • Minimum two years\' experience in accounting for federally and privately sponsored research grants
Specific Job Skills
  • Excellent MS Excel skills are required with proficiency in pivot tables and data queries.
  • Passion for driving the right business decisions, accounting practices
  • Required mental activities involve continuous use of the ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English.
  • Required mental activities used frequently include decision making, use of discretion, interpersonal skills and strong communication skills, problem analysis, customer service, the performance of basic and advanced mathematics and independent judgment and/or independent action; teamwork, negotiation, and training/supervising (all used occasionally); and presentations/teaching, creativity, and the performance of basic programming (all used rarely).
  • Required physical activities include continuous sitting and frequent talking, hearing, and repetitive motions of hands/wrists. Required physical activities used less frequently include standing, walking, and reaching (all used occasionally); and bending, stooping, kneeling, handling and feeling (all used rarely).
  • The ability to push, pull and lift an average of 5 pounds throughout the day is required, as is the ability to carry an average of 5 pounds throughout the day.
Working Conditions
  • Telecommuting, or virtual working, is the preferred primary working arrangement for this role. However, work on site at a Bloodworks location will be required from time-to-time, on a frequency basis that may vary dependent on the nature of the work being performed, as well as other factors (candidates must reside in WA / OR state to be considered - Relocation assisatnce may be offered).
  • Job requires some extended work hours.
  • This position has significant senior leadership contact.
  • Bloodworks is a community-supported non-profit organization. As such, incumbent can expect to work with volunteers.
  • Extensive computer/viewing monitor work apply to this role.
  • This position has indirect exposure to blood borne pathogens.
