Job Summary

Provides cross-coverage direct primary and acute medical care to clients of Whitman-Walker Health, supervised by a licensed physician. An interest in LGBT health, PrEP for HIV prevention, and transgender hormone management and care is required. Should be comfortable independently managing chronic disease conditions, including diabetes and hypertension. Should be comfortable providing cross-coverage care to patients who have a separate primary care provider in the practice. The provider will not maintain their own patient panel.

Primary Essential Duties

  • Primary duty is to provide respectful and stigma-free primary medical care at Whitman-Walker Health.
  • The Staff Coverage Provider will see patients when a fellow provider is out of the office for unanticipated leave or PTO.
  • The Staff Coverage Provider works with the care team to provide needed care during the PCP\xe2\x80\x99s absence. The Staff Coverage Provider will be available to work at either of the two clinical sites with same-day notification.
  • The Staff Coverage Provider will be notified daily where to report to work and which patients they will be covering that day.
  • The Staff Coverage Provider will consult with their supervising physician for any complex medical problems. Responsibilities will include seeing patients in the clinic, checking labs, refills, and telephone encounters.
  • The Staff Coverage Provider will also function as a virtual provider for urgent portal messages and urgent telehealth visits.
  • Primary medical care includes the ability to provide gender-affirming services, LGBTQ competent care in addition to the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illnesses
  • Practices according to state licensure regulations under the supervision of a practicing physician.
  • Provides integrated, team-based clinical care to a diverse patient population.
  • Ensures coordinated medical, behavioral health, addictions, legal, and nutritional care in a medical home model.
  • Interacts with patients using cultural sensitivity.
  • Appropriately consults with their supervising physician on patients with multiple complex medical problems as needed for management.
  • Documents all medical care in a timely and accurate manner in the electronic health record according to Department standards and in compliance with regulators.
  • Codes patient visits accurately using Medicare and other insurance standards.
  • Collaborates with external healthcare facilities to facilitate access to specialty and inpatient care.
  • Responds in a timely fashion, according to WWH policy, to all patient and colleague inquiries in order to provide the most patient-centered and efficient care possible.
  • Actively participates in the Quality Improvement and Quality Assurance activities of the Medical Services team.
  • Actively participates in educational activities related to primary care standards at Whitman-Walker and in the community and is eager to supervise PANP students at WWH
  • Routinely participate in monthly/weekly interdisciplinary medical team meetings
  • Routinely participate in QI activities as directed by the Chief Health Officer or other managers.
  • Daily Team Review of clinical schedule in order to promote efficiency, communication, and advanced preparation among all members of the medical team.

Knowledge, Skills, and Talents Required
  • Experience and knowledge in the delivery of primary care, with an emphasis on diabetes care, women\xe2\x80\x99s health, and transgender care preferred.
  • Ability to communicate in an effective and professional manner with patients and staff members.
  • Excellent face-to-face interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively educate, treat, and counsel clients from diverse educational, social, and economic backgrounds.
  • Sensitivity to all areas of diversity, including HIV status, race, ethnicity, ability, age, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
  • Knowledge of standard medical office/clinic procedures, including specific knowledge of standards, protocols, and ethical guidelines related to the provision of primary care.
  • Self-motivation, flexibility, and the ability to provide primary medical care in a fast-paced clinic environment.
  • Comfort in providing cross-coverage care for patients with whom they do not have a longitudinal relationship.
  • Fluency in Spanish or Amharic preferred.
Education and Experience Required
  • Must have and maintain a current license as a Physician Assistant in the District of Columbia. Must have or the ability to obtain a license to practice as a Physician Assistant in Maryland and Virginia.
  • One to three years experience post-PA licensure preferred.
  • Must have and maintain a current Controlled Substance license from the District of Columbia.
  • Must have and maintain a current Controlled Substance Registration Certificate from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
  • May be required to become certified in medical care for gender dysphoria when such certification is available.
  • Basic Life Support certification required.
Working Conditions:

Working conditions for this position are normal for an office environment. Individual may be required to work evenings and/or weekends and organization events.

Physical Demands:
  • Lifting: No more than 20 lbs. and infrequently.
  • Movement: Standing and sitting for long periods.
  • Visual: Long periods on the computer.
  • Concentration: Extended periods of engagement with computer systems where concentration is key to accuracy in data entry. Intermittent periods of engagement with a telephone system to respond to inquiries where concentration is key to task performance.
  • Communication: Direct and indirect communication. Written and verbal competency.
