Summary:
Under direct supervision, performs duties to reprocess surgical instruments and equipment according to established decontaminating, cleaning and sterilization procedures. Prepares, stocks and distributes case carts for use in operating rooms. Receives, verifies, stores and maintains inventories of materials, supplies and equipment utilized in the operating room. Prepares and maintains related manual and computerized records.
Responsibilities:
Prepares individual case for each surgical procedure. Using computer terminal, accesses records and prints pick lists from automated Surgi-Service system. Prints report for others to verify accuracy of scheduled procedure(s) before cases are picked. Locates items, stocks case cart accordingly, labels with name of patient and surgeon, etc., and sends to operating room. Responds to calls for additional equipment and instruments as needed.
Receives used case carts and unloads instruments, equipment, etc., following strict procedures and safety precautions to decontaminate cart and contents as necessary. Separates instruments, disassembles drills, saws and similar equipment and cleans according to designated method, i.e. by hand or by processing through appropriate automatic washer. Performs routine spore tests on washers and sterilizes and the like.
Reassembles instrument tray and sets. Lubricates, reassembles and recalibrates drills, saws and similar items, testing to assure in working order. Wraps, labels and separates items in accordance with sterilization method required. Forwards those items requiring gas sterilization to Central Services for processing.
Prepares items for sterilization by stamping each with Julian date, load and machine number and expiration date. Steam sterilizes all assembled instruments and sets. Checks and sets gauges and operated steam sterilizer and ultrasonic units. Reshelf sterilized items.
Performs duties to maintain stock levels of materials, supplies and equipment, including sterilized items utilized in Surgical Services. Receives materials and verifies contents by reviewing against packing slips, receiving slips, purchase orders, etc. Unpacks items and visually checks contents for damaged items. May break down bulk quantities into requisition sizes.
Stores supplies and equipment in proper area and according to established procedures, with particular attention to items having specific storage requirements. Checks expiration dates of items, reprocessing outdated items as appropriate, and routinely checks inventory and expiration dates on OR emergency case carts. Notifies supervisor when items are no longer usable; assist with returns of same as necessary.
Reorders and receives supplies through automated materials management system. Issues bulk supplies to cost centers through the Surgi-Server.
May contact others to expedite delivery of orders or to discuss return of merchandise.
Prepares and maintains various manual and computerized records of all activities, including materials received and issued, etc.
Works closely with accounts payable department to resolve outstanding payment issues.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
High School Graduate or equivalent with the ability to read, write and speak fluent English.
Ability to operate a personal computer is required to access and input information to prepare and maintain records.
Ability to identify a wide variety of surgical instruments and equipment in order to select appropriate items for case carts and instrument sets, etc.
Ability to operate automatic washers and sterilization equipment according to equipment operating instructions.
Organizational and numerical ability to receive, count and store materials and to prepare and maintain case carts, etc.
EXPERIENCE:
At least six months previous related work experience demonstrating familiarity with surgical instrumentation, decontamination and sterilization techniques and stock room functions.
Such experience may have been obtained by performing related duties in central services, surgical reprocessing or surgical stock room.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Visual and manual dexterity to operate automatic washers and sterilization equipment according to equipment operating instructions.
Physical ability to stand for long periods of time, to lift and carry moderately heavy surgical trays, to push carts into sterilization unit and to receive and store supplies, materials and equipment.
General hospital environment with normal conditions associated with patient care.
