Your preceptor is your guide, educator, and mentor. By the end of your internship, you will be ready to work independently as a Surgical Technician. The Surgical Technician orientation is a full time (36 hours per week) commitment You are expected to work full time as a Surgical Technician at Weeks Medical Center for two years post-graduation. The Surgical Technician Intern will be required to complete an online didactic program.The Surgical technician assists the surgeon at the sterile field by providing appropriate and adequate sterile instruments and other supplies during the operative procedure. Maintain the surgical field through aseptic practices. Works under the supervision of the surgeons, Registered Nurses or other surgical personnel as a member of the peri-operative team. Assists in the nursing care and preparation of the surgical patient for surgery. Responsible for the assembly of cases. Works cooperatively with ancillary departments and other team members. Participates in performance improvement initiatives.Essential Functions:

  • Competent to provide equipment and supplies based on patient needs and participates in the economical utilization of supplies.
  • Establishes priorities, organizes actions and communicates patient needs with team members and other departments in a friendly manner.
  • Able to scrub, gown and glove self and team members.
  • Creates and maintains a sterile field, uses principles of aseptic techniques and universal precautions.
  • Competent to demonstrate manual dexterity in handling instruments and equipment during the operative procedure.
  • Able to assist on all surgical procedures, anticipates the needs of the surgeon
  • Able to perform call duties and adheres to on call policy.
  • After completion of surgery, the surgical technician helps to transport the patient to PACU and assist in assuring comfort and then return to OR for cleaning, maintenance, and sterilization of instruments.
  • Verifies operative site according to policy.
  • Able to perform accurate sponge, sharp and instrument count.
  • Able to handle drugs and solutions under the supervision of the RN circulator.
  • Operates mechanical electrical and air powered equipment according to manufacturers instruction.
  • Competent to handle surgical specimens and assist the RN in proper labeling.
  • Anticipates problems/emergencies and takes appropriate action.
  • Strictly follows hospital policy and procedures and maintains patient/ physician/ staff confidentiality in all activities.
Essential Qualifications: High school graduate, Current LNA, LPN, MA, EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic certification required. Current BLS certification required; ACLS certification preferred.
