Job Description


Summary

Performs entry-level work. Work involves installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic signs, signals, roadway striping, and other associated appurtenances. Works under close supervision with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement. This position must be able to be scheduled for on-call rotation.

Essential Duties & Required Qualifications

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work schedule is Monday - Thursday from 6:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (schedule is subject to change).
  • Uses computer programs and plotters to layout standard and design non-standard signs for plotting on retro-reflective sign films, maintains, installs, and repairs traffic signs, signals, roadway striping, street lights, and other associated appurtenances.
  • Performs scheduled and unscheduled installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signs, streetlights, traffic markings, traffic signals and other associated equipment.
  • Prepares material requisitions and work orders.
  • Follows established policies, procedures, and techniques concerning traffic signs, signals and outdoor lighting.
  • Receives, investigates complaints, takes appropriate action as instructed, and makes recommendations.
  • Inspects new installations for completeness, quality of work, and functionality.
  • Maintains and troubleshoots pedestrian signals, equipment, and school zone signals.
  • Performs traffic signal timing adjustments as directed by a licensed professional engineer.
  • Operates a bucket truck, work truck, and other tools and equipment necessary to perform assigned work, including chain saws and other trimming and pruning tools.
  • Maintains an inventory of basic materials, supplies, spare parts, equipment, and hardware.
  • Follows and implements training, enforcement of safety policies, proper usage of equipment, safety devices, vehicles and all departmental and city policies.
  • Escalates customer complaints to Crew Leader or Assistant Director.
  • Participates in scheduled traffic signal maintenance. Installs equipment, replace or repair signal heads and hardware, controllers, flashers, switches, time base coordinators.
  • Performs maintenance of tools and equipment so they are kept in good and safe working condition; make minor adjustments or remove from service until proper repairs are made.
  • Ensures that necessary materials, tools and equipment are taken to the job site in an efficient and orderly manner.
  • Performs limited mowing and tree trimming related to sign installations.
  • Responds to after-hours call out for emergency situations including on call rotation and special events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. May be temporarily assigned to other work within the Street Department.
Required Education and Experience:
  • High school graduate or its equivalent.
Required Certificates and Licenses:
  • Valid Driver\'s License. (Approximately 15% driving time in a company vehicle.)
Preferred Qualifications:
  • One year work experience in repair and maintenance of mechanical systems or experience similar to the job duties.
  • Street signs and marking experience.
  • Electrical work experience.
  • Signal work experience.
  • Texas Driver\'s License or ability to obtain a Texas driver\'s license within 90 days per state law.
  • Valid Texas Commercial Driver\'s License, Class A with air break endorsement or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of employment.
  • Possession of the following IMSA or approved equivalent certifications (This position is eligible for certification pay):
  • Work Zone (or ability to obtain in 12 months)
  • Traffic Signal Technician Level I Certification (or ability to obtain in 18 months)
  • Traffic Signal Field Technician Level II Certification (or ability to obtain in 24 months)
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to: operate a dump truck, bucket lift truck, skid loader, and small hand tools, chainsaw, shovel, two-way radio, cell phone, measuring devices; ability to drive a vehicle to and from various work sites.
  • Knowledge and ability to set up secure work zones using cones and barricades.
  • Knowledge of duties performed in construction and maintenance of streets and roadways, hazards and safety precautions common to equipment operations.
  • Skill in using computers and related software applications; handling multiple tasks and prioritizing; and operating assigned equipment, tools and vehicles safely.
  • Ability to: communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; communicate with other employees and the general public in a courteous and diplomatic manner; follow detailed verbal and written instruction; read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; work safely; and to work hours other than the regular daytime schedule such as shift work, on call, or emergency response situations.
  • Must be able to wear city provided uniform and city issued personal protective equipment - Steel-toed leather boots, gloves, eye protection, head protection, safety vest, and ear protection.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and push, pull, drag up to 150 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Working Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee works outdoors in extreme heat or cold temperature and during inclement weather; exposed to dust fumes and loud noises. Frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.
