Under general supervision, to perform basic servicing of county transit vehicles and airport maintenance equipment, to receive, and inspect tires on county transit vehicles and airport equipment; to assist journey mechanics as directed on maintenance and repair jobs; to clean the interior and exterior of transit buses; to do minor maintenance and repair work on the county airports; to drive a variety of motor vehicles as needed and which does include transit vehicles, and to do related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is a working level Equipment Service Worker classification. Incumbents perform a variety of basic servicing, mechanics assistance, tire related services, cleaning, maintenance, and repair work, and driving various types of vehicles as needed to drive a variety of motor vehicles including transit vehicles (STAGE bus).

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Airport Duties:
Minor maintenance on airport generators, airport beacons (requires climbing 40 ft. tower), runway lighting, various navigational aids, small equipment such as lawn mowers, weed eaters and airport vehicles. Sweeps and does minor maintenance on runway, taxiway and apron surfaces. Performs vegetation management (including noxious weed eradication and on-ground tree trimming), monitors aircraft parked on ramps and cars parked on airport parking areas for fee collection purposes. Collects fuel flowage records for billing purposes. Inspects all airport fire extinguishers, makes weekly status reports on airport defects and repair requirements, inspects airport buildings for problems and makes minor repairs as needed. Monitors, tests and collect samples of airport potable water sources for contamination and submit samples to Environmental Health. Monitors contractor safety procedures during major construction activities. Monitors and orders inventory of airport electrical parts (various bulbs, fuses etc.) Cleans and restocks restrooms as needed at airports. Repairs fences, gates and locks.
Transit Duties:
Receives and inspects tires, checks tire pressures and notifies supervisors of needed repair/replacement, performs light battery maintenance, changes various lights on transit vehicles, performs basic bus inspections on backup buses each morning. Performs preventable maintenance on various Stage non revenue vehicles, may change belts or hoses and other maintenance under direction of journey mechanic, cleans interior and exterior of transit buses. Performs minor maintenance on office and grounds. Make a daily bus status report for management. Monitors / inspects all buses for fire extinguishers and oversees annual servicing). Monitors bus supplies inventory (oil, anti freeze, towels, first aid kits, etc.). Monitors the condition of all county bus stops and does any corrective repairs needed including cleaning, adding current schedules and safety concerns; acts as relief transit driver when needed, assists with bus breakdowns and emergencies. Other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Training and Experience:
Any combination of training or experience that would provide the knowledge and skills is to successfully perform the listed duties is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skills would be:

One year of responsible work experience in performing basic vehicle servicing and maintenance and repair work.

Special Requirements:
Capable of obtaining a valid commercial California Driver\'s License and with appropriate passenger endorsement, and vehicle transit training (VTT) within 120 days of employment.

Incumbent must complete requisite training and obtain required driver\'s license endorsements within six months of hire.

An incumbent must obtain a Qualified Applicators Certificate, with appropriate endorsements, issued by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation within 18 months of initial employment.

Applicants will be required to submit to a pre-employment physical examination.

NOTE: This job classification is required to participate in the County of Siskiyou Drug and Alcohol Testing program as mandated by the Department of Transportation. Applicants will be required to submit to a pre-employment/pre-duty drug test. This position will also be subject to random drug and alcohol tests once employed by the County.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Occasionally sits; frequently stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crawl, crouch and climb ladders up to 40 feet; normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use a variety of hand and power equipment used in the mechanical trades; use a computer and telephone; operate a variety of vehicles.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in a shop environment; typically works outdoors in all types of weather; exposure to smoke, gasses, and fumes; exposure to hazards such as moving machine parts, electrical current, and liquid and dry pesticides, dust, pollen, and insects; must be able to wear safety equipment and clothing such as a hard hat, safety goggles/glasses, rubber/plastic gloves, rubber boots, chemical resistant clothing, and protective mask; drives county roads under various weather conditions; continuous contact with other staff.
