Job Description


Jewish Family Services, Inc. (JFS), a Milwaukee-area, not-for-profit social services agency, is seeking a Vice President of Development and Communications. This position will be responsible for successful achievement of the agency\'s annual and long-range fund development and communications strategies and objectives. Reporting to the President/CEO, this position will lead the development, execution and administration of all aspects of our fund development programs. This position is also responsible for developing and executing the agency\'s communications and marketing strategies and activities; commensurate experience in media management and relations, graphic design, content development, etc., particularly with regard to production of program and service promotional materials, and our annual report.

JFS and our subsidiary, JFS Housing, Inc. (JFSHI), have combined annual operating budgets of $9 million, and the assets of both entities total nearly $40 million. The VP of Development and Communications is responsible for raising $1.5 million dollars annually to support both entities through donations from individuals, foundation and governmental grants, campaigns and events, etc. Additionally, JFS has an endowment of approximately $6.6 million, which is managed by a separate foundation. This position will be responsible for increasing JFS endowments by securing additional gifts for existing endowments, as well as establishing new endowments and legacy gifts. The Vice President of Development and Communications is a member of the JFS senior management team and will work closely with our Boards of Directors and Fund Development Committee. As a relationship\xe2\x80\x93driven professional, the VP of Development & Communications will work with members of both Boards of Directors to identify opportunities for fund development growth and appropriate involvement by board members in the development process.

Our organization operates in a dynamic environment with a diverse revenue mix, including contracts and grants with federal, state and local governmental entities, the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, United Way of Greater Milwaukee and Waukesha County, private foundations, and individual donors. The VP of Development & Communications will serve in a variety of external and internal roles, building relationships with key donors and stakeholders, and current and potential partners in philanthropy. The ideal candidate will be highly organized, detail oriented and able to oversee multiple fund development and communications priorities. Above all, the right candidate will have a true passion for our mission, the strategic vision, analytical thinking and team-building, organizational and management skills necessary to be successful in this role.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Bachelor\'s degree in communications, marketing or a similar field; CFRE Certification is preferred.
  • At least five years\' experience in not-for-profit fund development leadership roles.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fundraising including capital campaign, endowments, special events, annual campaigns, donor prospecting and solicitation, and planned/legacy giving.
  • Experience in major donor cultivation, solicitation and securing gifts.
  • Knowledge of industry best practices and codes of conduct established by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA), CFRE International, Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP), National Association of Charitable Gift Planners (NACGP), etc.
  • Experience working with boards of directors, committees and volunteers.
  • Experience managing development department staff, contractors, consultants, etc.
  • Familiarity with the administration and/or provision of social services, related state, county and/or local governmental entities, and the legislative process.
  • Experienced in database management and proficiency in all Microsoft Office applications
  • Strong writing and oral communications skills appropriate for different audiences
  • Detail oriented, organized, accurate, efficient, and reliable
General
  • Must have a valid driver\'s license, access to reliable vehicle, and automobile insurance coverage throughout employment and successfully pass a MVR and insurability check.
  • Knowledge, understanding, and/or willingness to learn Jewish culture and traditions and those of the Agency population as necessary.
  • Accept other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Candidates must successfully pass a criminal background check with the Wisconsin Department of Justice and a caregiver background check with the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, the Department of Children and Families and the Department Safety and Professional Services.
  • Candidates must pass a Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender and Wisconsin Sex Offender Registry screening.
