Duties Summary

The Visitor Information Program Assistant II (Japanese) is responsible for greeting, welcoming and assisting the traveling public in providing information of interest relative to hotels and other accommodations, ground and air transportation, tourist attractions and activities and disseminates maps, brochures and periodicals at the airport. This class is responsible for speaking a designated foreign language while conversing with the traveling public and others and providing interpreter services as required.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

To qualify, applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

Basic Experience: Applicants must possess experience which demonstrated the ability to read, understand and follow oral and written instructions, and a high degree of verbal skill. This experience may be met from part-time and/or unpaid work. However, there must be evidence that participation was on continuous basis, but not necessarily on a full-time normal work basis. This requirement may also be met by possession of a high school diploma, or equivalent.

In addition to the Basic Experience Requirement, applicants must have progressively responsible experience of the kind and quality described below.

General Experience: One (1) year work experience which demonstrates positive evidence that applicants possess patience, tact, and an even temper in meeting and dealing with others. Examples of desirable experience may include, but are not limited to, experience providing hospitality of customer service catering to the traveling public.

Special Language Requirement: For Visitor Information Program Assistant II, in order to be considered for appointment and to enter on duty, applicants must possess knowledge of the ability to speak the Japanese language in addition to the English language.

Substitutions Allowed: Successful completion of coursework from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester credit hours of coursework for six (6) months of General Experience, provided the coursework included at least three (3) semester credit hours of coursework in psychology, sociology, social work , or other behavioral science.

Driver\'s License: Applicants must possess a valid driver\'s license to drive in the State of Hawaii at the time of appointment.

Federal Criminal History Records Check: In accordance with Federal regulations, persons who are being considered for employment in positions which require unescorted access to secured areas at the airport must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint-based criminal history record check.

In order to be granted the Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) clearance, prospective employees must not have been convicted, or found "not guilty by reason of insanity," of a disqualifying criminal offense within ten years from the date of the application. Upon recommendation for hire, prospective employees will be required to successfully undergo the fingerprint-based criminal history record check and be found free of disqualifying convictions during the preceding ten years.

Custom and Border Protection Security Level Clearance: In addition to the SIDA clearance, prospective employees may also be required to obtain Custom and Border Protection (CBP) Security Level clearance, which involves passing an additional security background check.
