Viticulture Research Internship Graduate Student

Duration: 6-9 months

Start Date: January 2024

The Research Educational Program is a unique program in partnership with universities and E. & J. Gallo Winery, 6-9 month placement opportunities based out of E. & J. Gallo\'s headquarters in Modesto, California. This program is part of a research collaboration for Master\'s and PhD students to apply their advanced knowledge in remote sensing and precision viticulture within the E. & J. Gallo Winegrowing Research Viticulture department. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in an industrial research environment and increase your skill base for future employment.

What You Will Do

Specific training and project work undertaken by interns may include the following, depending on available placement(s):

Viticulture Research: Remote Sensing and GIS Data Science

• Using GIS software to create visualizations from geospatial data to support vineyard management decisions.
• Employing coding languages, such as Python or R, to apply algorithms for image classification, feature extraction, and to develop predictive models or simulations of vineyard processes.
• Collaborating on scientific projects and providing remote sensing/GIS analysis support and data interpretation.
• Integrating geospatial data with other data sources such as climate, agronomic or production data

Compensation

• Hiring Salary Range Posted: $24 - $25 / hour
• Actual compensation paid within the range will be determined by factors such as the education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data

• Currently enrolled at a University and working towards a Master\'s or PhD in the school of Life Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, or Engineering OR obtained a Master\'s OR PhD in the school of Life Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, or Engineering.
• Strong applied technical skills and analytical problem-solving skills.
• Good oral and written communication skills.
• Candidates for this position must have a valid driver\'s license and a safe driving record. Required to obtain a California driver\'s license or appropriate state driver\'s license within 30 days of hire.
• Reliable transportation to and from work.
• Required to lift and move up to 40 lbs. when necessary.
• Required to work overtime, including evenings, weekends and holidays when necessary.
• Required to be 21 years of age or older.

Min Quals Standard

• Required to be 18 years or older. This may be in addition to other age requirements, if applicable, as listed in this job description.

What Will Set You Apart

• Hands-on experience with cloud computing and databases.
• Proven record of high-level statistical programming in Python or R.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Excellent organizational skills and experience managing multiple assignments. Self-motivated with a passion for research.
• Willingness to work at heights of up to 50 feet, on tops of tanks inspecting wine surfaces when necessary.

• Required to lift and move up to 40 lbs. when necessary.
• Willingness to work under conditions that can include hot & cool temperatures, insects, and being in an industrial plant environment.
• Willingness to travel and perform short term tasks at out of town winery and vineyard sites.
• Willingness to drive company truck and commercial van to transport grape and wine samples to different Gallo facilities
