DescriptionVolunteer Search and RescueUnder general supervision of the Search and Rescue Commander, responds to emergencies, urban rescue and other calls to protect life. To perform a range of tasks to support ongoing search, rescue, recovery operation and other emergencies.Examples of Duties

  • Responds promptly to emergency calls of incidents when notified.
  • Serves as an responder during search, rescue and recovery operations.
  • Assists in search, rescue, and recovery operations utilizing appropriate equipment and techniques.
  • Provides emergency medical treatment within the scope of certification and training.
  • Adheres to all applicable safety procedures and practices.
  • Performs tasks or duties as assigned during a mission such, on-trail carry outs, equipment transport, and operation of two-wheel or four-wheel drive vehicles in a variety of non-emergent driving conditions.
  • Effectively communicates verbally by means of two-way radio as person-to-person and in writing through completion of various records, memos and letters.
  • Maintains apparatus, and search and rescue equipment.
  • Participates in all phases of training necessary to acquire the knowledge and skills required of the position.
  • Assists in maintaining records and submitting reports.
  • Services the community through volunteering.
  • Walks, climbs, crawls and as necessary to accomplish rescue and personal safety.
QualificationsEducation and Experience: Must hold a current and valid Nevada Driver\'s License, must be 18 years of age.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesRequired Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations: Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.Basic knowledge of standard search, rescue, and recovery methodology and techniques. Knowledge of the Incident Command System (ICS). Knowledge of basic navigation techniques, and the ability to use a map, compass, and/or GPS equipment to determine location. Ability to provide basic emergency medical care such as first aid for minor injuries, and CPR. Ability to assist in patient packaging and transport. Knowledge of the procedures for Body Substance Isolation (BSI), and the precautions required to prevent exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Knowledge of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and its appropriate use in search, rescue, and recovery operations. Knowledge of situation awareness fundamentals including personal equipment, essential rescue equipment, and general all-risk hazards. Knowledge of the use and operating characteristics of radios used in SAR operations including mobile units. Ability to operate two and four-wheel drive vehicles in a variety of terrain and weather conditions.Physical/Mental Demands & Working Environment: The physical requirement described herein are repetitive of those that an employee must meet to perform the essential functions of this position successfully. The volunteer must be able to perform in a confined environment and to be available during varied shifts, hours, and locations, including weekends and holidays. Work routinely involves physically rigorous assignments and strenuous activity. While performing the duties of this position, the volunteer is frequently required to walk or jog on uneven surfaces, bend, stoop, climb, crawl, squat, and stand for long periods of time. The volunteer must be able to lift and/or move weight of up to fifty (50) pounds. Must be able to; carry heavy loads up and down stairs, to hear and respond; be able to effectively communicate via two-way radio and over the telephone; be able to grasp and safely use tools. Under stress, incumbent must be able to utilize critical thinking skills, such as logic, judgement, and reasoning. Exposure to hazards, including, but not limited to; vehicle traffic, body fluids, toxic agents, smoke, dust, fumes, heat, cold, noise, and odor. Performs duties both inside and outside; being outside occurs on a frequent basis and requires exposure to; vehicle traffic, dust, fumes, smoke, high noise levels, and extreme weather conditions.
