  • This position serves as a Wildlife Biologist for the Fillmore Field Office, West Desert District.
  • Design and assist in implementing habitat improvement and restoration projects for field office in coordination with more senior wildlife biologist or the supervisor.
  • Prepare, evaluate, and conduct progressively more complex biological analysis of wildlife ecology and behavior as it relates to land and water resource projects.
  • Process permit applications to ensure compliance with appropriate federal law.
  • Participate as a trainee to provide input on wildlife projects to the wildlife portion of the local officexe2x80x99s annual work plan.
  • May serve on field level interdisciplinary teams responsible for writing and reviewing multi-field office biological input to environmental assessments, biological assessments, development of protective stipulations, and resource management plans.
  • Document, evaluate, and report any changes in habitat status.
  • Responsible for identification of impacts to wildlife habitat and sensitive species by other resource activities.
  • With assistance from higher graded Biologist, reviews wildlife habitat quality and wildlife populations and incorporates the findings into rangeland health assessments.

Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level comparable in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Wildlife Biologist. Qualifying specialized experience includes: monitoring wildlife field inventories; using automated systems to input and generate reports; gathering and/or preparing wildlife field data; and surveying, mapping and/or documenting a variety of wildlife species and habitat conditions.
OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have one (1) full year (18 semester hours) of graduate-level education in a related field of study.
OR Superior Academic Achievement: (See OPM's General Policies, ) S.A.A. must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled.
OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the difficulty and complexity to do the work of this position.Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.Physical Demands: The work is sedentary but may occasionally require some physical exertion such as walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces and exposure to extreme temperatures. The field duties of this position require that the employee operate four-wheel drive vehicles on and off in isolated areas.Work Environment: Work is performed in the office and field locations under a variety of topographic and climatic conditions.EducationThis position has a positive education requirement which requires that you have: * Degree: biological science that included:
  • At least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; and
  • At least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (Excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.); and
  • At least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences.
OR * Combination of education and experience: equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown in 1 above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
